π€£π€£ I was very confused when she showed up. βWait, heβs been showing Hispanic celebrities. Isnβt Lady Gagaβ¦ Italian??β
Ok, maybe it isnβt Liam? Iβm seeing conflicting information; will try to confirm. Either way, it was a clear reference to that incident.
I canβt speak a word of Spanish, and have never listened to a Bad Bunny song in my life, but amazingly, I was in fact able to enjoy the half time show. Turns out you just have to be a person with ears and eyes who likes music and live performance!
Our chocolate prices in Australia have doubled in the last few years. Itβs insane. (I have no idea why chocolate specifically.)
What really annoyed me about that one was that I actually saw it first, and it wouldnβt let me enter it! When Iβd found all the other words I spent AGES staring at it, trying to make it work and finally entered the crossed version again and presto, it accepted it.
Watch this get rescinded the first time thereβs a group of Muslims praying together.
I might lose my citizenship because Iβve never done one. Why bother when you can just eat the Tim Tam? π€£
It made me rethink my position on workplace NDAs as a whole - obviously I was aware of them in the context of the #metoo complaints but thereβs SO much that is routinely hidden from employees/potential employees that really shouldnβt be, for everyoneβs benefit.
It sounds naive of me considering Iβd always worked in corporate finance but I hadnβt realised just how common it is for NDAs to be used in the workplace and just how much is routinely hushed up - even in privately held companies and for matters that are unlikely to significantly harm the brand.
I got a settlement at a previous job and Iβm sure some people thought the amount was outrageous, but frankly, what I would have MUCH rather received was an apology and a pledge to treat future employees better. It frustrates me so much that there is never any real accountability for companies/execs.
Itβs disingenuous to suggest that the reason the backpacker story was popular is because of racism, though. It was a completely different situation to the others cited. Honestly I think a fair chunk of the coverage was due to the fact she had an Instagram account outlets could mine for content.
(And to be clear I do think there is racism involved as well, but the situations of the missing Aboriginal men mentioned in the story are quite different.)
To be fair, the backpacker story gained attention because 1) she survived, which is pretty miraculous and 2) she was foreign, so could be presumed to be unfamiliar with the Outback (and possibly doing stupid tourist things). A white Australian would get less coverage, especially a man.
One of the (few, minuscule) good things about this year has been Alexandra Petri moving from WaPo to the Atlantic, where I already had a subscription and which isnβt owned by Jeff Bezos.
Fascinating, thank you! I knew people could have mosaic genes but if I understand the article correctly, the mother had <5% X- or XX cells? What insane odds to get pregnant twice!
Wait, what? Iβve never heard of this; do you have sources? (Not arguing with you - Iβd just like to learn more! It was my understanding even with various XY disorders affecting external appearance, those individuals wouldnβt be able to conceive due to their differing internal bits.)
Ah, my favourite ME symptom! First of all, lie down. Have a cold drink if you can. If you canβt stop your mind from racing, try putting on a podcast or audiobook - you want to distract your brain so itβs less aware of your heart, and then let the lying down & resting do its work.
Do⦠do they think coal magically regenerates after you mine it??
When Milly was a puppy I had neighbours across the road with little girls who were obsessed with fairies, so somewhere on my phone thereβs a series of photos of me leaving a tooth for the doggy tooth fairy and the treats she left in return π€£
How do you prove youβre a citizen if youβre not given due process?
I mean habeas corpus is in Magna fucking Carta but it tracks that these soulless cretins want to cosplay the early medieval period
However long that is. These people have been disappeared - we have no idea if theyβre even all still alive. Whatβs worse is theyβve been allowed no contact with the outside world - as far as they know theyβve been abandoned to rot.
βOne of us stays up until he is asleep and the other one gets up early with himβ So the very young child is getting less sleep than the fully grown adults? Cool, Iβm sure thatβs fine.
if nothing else credit to cory booker for the longest speech a stanford guy has ever given without announcing a product that will doom us all
Also, thereβs already a US military base in Greenland, so, I dunno, maybe use that?
The European teenage boys sitting next to me at this cafe would have more success being subtle if they didnβt punctuate their foreign conversation with βOnlyFansβ every second sentence π€£π€¦π»ββοΈ

They *need* to get rid of βDEIβ because us being in the room makes it clear how dumb they actually are.
I find it SO TELLING that there was a huge cohort of his supporters who voted Trump in 2016. (And 2024, Iβd bet. π)
