I’ve chaotically ended up in this argument around cosplaying characters from KPDH. And like… save me. I shouldn’t be arguing about this. But some people are fucking stupid. Like i’m so sorry to break this to you, but you’re not owed the chance to cosplay using people’s cultural clothing?? Wild that.
But most of my friends in the humanities never learnt anything like this bc humanities work includes less data manipulation. And that’s fucking dangerous. We’ve set people out into the world not teaching them how to read basic statistics.
This, however, is not something most humanities classes outside of college-level courses will teach you. I learnt about this kind of thing from science classes and research bc of my work with large data sets.
Polling data can easily be skewed based on who decided to answer the poll and where the people who decided to answer the poll are from. What you need is actual voting data, the literal numbers given on who voted.
Like so often I get people saying to me ‘Asian men voted democrat more than Asian women in the 2024 election’ and when I ask for a citation they give me the CBS exit polls from the 2024 election. Here’s the issue with that: exit polls aren’t voting statistics.
People struggle to read statistics or basic scicomm articles in a way that won’t be solved by having them read Jane Austen. We have to teach people science better than we currently are.
Something I honestly find incredibly annoying is the thought that the educational crisis we’re facing is simply because society’s devalued the arts. That’s fundamentally just not true. The literacy and educational crisis is built out of a poor science education just as much.

Like i saw someone reccing ‘daughter of the moon goddess’ by sue lynn tann. Which is, undoubtedly, an excellent book. It’s also set in ancient china. There are no demons. Everyone is chinese. No one sings. There is no found family. Like… i’m sorry did u just go ‘yes asian!’ Wtf.
My one great fucking annoying is how many people keep reccing chinese media when talking about kpop demon hunters. Like… i get that those properties have folkloric focuses… but why are you reccing effectively historical wuxia as being similar to contemporary korean fantasy smh.
