Lake Onslow was NOT the "path to 100% renewable energy" claimed but a wasteful diversion.
Dry years problem solved, more wind power, North Island pumped hydro β New Zealand 100% renewables without Onslow

I could also highlight the need to TRIPLE NZ's wind power, building +2,400MW for a total of 3,600MW or thereabouts.
NZ also needs to TRIPLE the rate of building from where it is now ~133MW/year to 400MW/year to triple capacity in 6 years.
Stalling of wind farm building in 2010s left NZ behind.

I am not here to debate LNG vs Onslow.
I am here to debate the pros of North Island intra-week storage vs the cons of Onslow inter-year storage.
NZ can keep its engineers as easily working on good infrastructure projects which increase wealth of the nation vs bad projects which impoverish.
"CoC"?

Again, Kiwis are getting side-tracked arguing about the pros & cons of fossil fuels instead of accelerating the snail's pace build out of renewable generation - wind power needs to be tripled +2,400 MW built, but there's no push from govt to do that.

You missed that the month in September was a worse case than June and was used to update the model.
Once a decade freak weather conditions can be coped with by resorting to fossil fuel mothballed legacy generators or perhaps some demand management.

It is ludicrous to suggest that if only we could somehow polish a design or the modelling that it could make any difference to 2 Tier Keir, Rachel from Accounts, Red Ed, Armitage, Stark Raving Mad etc,
All they can do is rearrange the deck-chairs before the ship hits the iceberg.

Worldβs biggest-ever pumped-storage hydro-scheme, for Scotland?
Location Click for a larger image The map shows how and where the biggest-ever pumped-storage hydro-scheme could be built β Strathdearn in the Scottish Highlands. Energy storage capacity The β¦
It's the Govt. of free-marketeers (Tories) or cap-in-hand trade unionists (Labour) which is not viable to fund & lead a national infrastructure project of the scale of Strathdearn.
A command economy scientist is needed - that's me, π¨βπ¬it's not UK GOV.π€‘

Yes 9+TWh with Strathdearn 6.8TWh at concept stage.
Only a few of the smaller projects have developer, design and planning permission BUT funding to build remains illusive AFAIK.
The UK Gov is rearranging the deck chairs of UK pumped hydro so assume a timescale of WHEN DO THEY HIT THE ICEBERG?

If you are curious about the "Off-grid daily usage Focus Table" - this table differs in that it removes the "peak demand" column which isn't useful in the context of a property off grid and applies a "max" warning to the daily usage column.

A UK 120GW peak demand grid would need no more than about 4 terrawatt-hours of pumped hydro storage for 100% renewable energy grid - and could get away with much less TWh if dispatchable backup power (biomass or last resort fossil fuels) was available.

My "modelling shows renewable electricity can meet NZβs future demand" too but without the Onslow folly.
Instead, build pumped hydro on the NORTH ISLAND for intra-week storage of 30GWh/3GW.
Triple wind power.
Let the market build solar & batteries.

Wind energy matches NZ's seasonal energy demand better than solar.
Govt should build -
* triple wind power, 400MW/year for 6 years
* 30GWh/3GW of intra-week pumped hydro storage on the North Island
Let the market build -
* GW solar & batteries

So what's the hold up with building UK pumped hydro?
We have the sites - Scotland mostly but England and Wales too.
The problem is misgovernment, with Labour using the same clueless officials to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic.

I don't think the UK will need 10 TWh any time soon, but 2 to 4 TWh of pumped hydro would be very useful for a 120GW peak demand grid.
