Thank you!
I’d love to be included - I write historical fiction / literary fiction with a twist.
Got my copy of George Saunders’ Vigil in the mail today! This will be next up after I finish Stories from the Attic by William Gay.
Can’t wait for this one!
Six Feet Under - greatest series finale by a mile.
Bojack Horseman gets an honorable mention.
First up to read in 2026 pictured below - posthumously published short stories from the great William Gay.
In upcoming new releases I’m most excited for the new George Saunders novel Vigil.
What about you? What’s first up to read in 2026 and what new release are you most looking forward to?
Goodbye 2025
And now that I’ve completed The Barn, I have met my reading goal for 2025 just in the nick of time.
This was quite a heavy read to end the year on, but I highly recommend it.
3. One Battle After Another
4. Sentimental Value
5. The Life of Chuck
6. Weapons
7. Zootopia 2
8. The Naked Gun
9. Train Dreams
10. Who knows?
I still have a few on my watch list (The Testament of Ann Lee, It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent) but it will likely be awhile before I get to them, so here are my top films of 2025 as they stand now.
The top two are potential all-timers.
1. Sinners
2. Hamnet
Movie watching rundown from the weekend:
Hamnet - 10/10 (a masterpiece, I have so many words yet also none)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: the Last Straw - 7/10 (fun for dads and sons)
Free Willy - 8/10 (holds up really well as a good film for the whole family)
Chloe Zhao’s adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel Hamnet is one of the best book to film adaptations of all-time. It will leave you in awe and sobbing in all the best ways.

We were just joking about this very thing. The kids didn’t even notice.
And his hair was perfect…
Newton Lake was looking gorgeous just after sunrise as I walked to my kid’s school for Donuts with Grownups.
Stocked up for the local authors fest at the Moorestown Library next month. If you’re in the Jersey burbs of Philly stop by and see me on November 15th.
I can’t remember seeing a conclusion to a series as satisfying as Task last night. Every thread was woven to a beautiful conclusion. It all felt natural. Nothing forced. Enormously emotional. The performances were perfection, and the cinematography was like a moving painting.
Absolutely floored.
Zorba’s on Fairmount Ave in Philly has been my favorite restaurant in the city since I moved back to the Philly area over 20 years ago. They’ve been around way longer than that. And I don’t think they’ve changed a thing, spare for adding a full bar recently.

Fall into the darkness…
“Then Came Darkness is a brilliant historical thriller that compares to stories like East of Eden and The Night of the Hunter in its epic journey and menacing villain.”

Well, the Philadelphia region is in a Great Depression over the Phillies elimination and Eagles loss last night, so what better morning to announce the rerelease of my acclaimed historical thriller about the Great Depression, Then Came Darkness?
One Battle After Another was really good. Probably the 2nd best film of the year after Sinners. Will have to mull it over some more to see if it lands in the Top Five for Paul Thomas Anderson. Check out more of my thoughts at The Spin:
