I'm in the weirdest neighborhood right now. It's like a slum that was converted into a tourist attraction. There's a combination of run down houses, hip hop artists, souvenir shops, and tour guides. It's called Comuna 13 in Medellin, Colombia.
I've tried Reddit so many times, but I never feel entirely comfortable there. Are there any good sub-reddits where you feel comfortable? In the tech ones, people jump down your throat if you ask a dumb question. (Same for r/Colombia)

My Spanish-speaking friends don't give me feedback when I speak or text. (I've asked, and I know I need to ask more. But my then-girlfriend made it clear she didn't want to "be my Spanish tutor.") So feedback on speaking and writing. But more importantly cultural insights, particularly about dating.
Thank you! Even with four years of high school Spanish and four years of college Spanish, I had "only" reached B2 by the time I graduated. It took *a lot* of focused time and effort to go from B2 to C1. Passing the DELE exam was tough!
I'm so sick and tired of speaking English in Colombia. My students give me money, so it's a fair exchange. But I have so much more value as a person than just being a native English speaker. I prefer Spanish to express myself. And I know I need to do more to be assertive, but it's not easy.
In that regard, I would disagree with myself too. But it's important to balance the short-term (motivation) with the long-term (discipline). I'm very unmotivated to improve my Spanish beyond C1, but I'm sticking with my Spanish tutor out of loyalty and discipline.

As far as non-dating apps being used for dating, I know a woman who met her husband on Twitter. And a diff woman who met her long-term boyfriend on Twitch. But obviously some of us come on these apps to learn and share thoughts.
Okay, that's really surprising. I remember when I was in high school I saw a woman post a picture of just her arm with a sunset in the background. It was a nice picture, and she was getting matches and messages. (This was on OkCupid if you can believe it.)
My recommendation would be to focus on the journey, not the destination, i.e. read for two hours per week or take four classes per month. You can control inputs; you can't control outputs (results).
If I remember anything about being an adolescent boy, I think that would just attract them even more. 😹

Google's AI search results sent a woman to one of my language events, but it failed to specify what language the event was for, what the activity was, or the correct name for my group. Thankfully, the woman speaks that language, but it's a cautionary tale for event organizers.
What if hypothetically I were a contractor for a large multilateral organization teaching English lessons? They'd still need English lessons, right? Right!? 😬

I organized an event for "jeux de société en français" (board games in French) here in Bogotá. However, a local guy didn't realize it was a French event. We adjusted the games to play in French, Spanish, and English. (He spoke the latter two. The rest of us spoke all three.)
I love meeting other people learning languages other than English (and Spanish) here in Bogota because they share my love of languages, unlike locals learning English who (primarily) do it out of necessity and/or for economic reasons.
But, yeah, I have teaching accounts with a few different platforms. None of them pay well by my standards, but some people are able to make a living that way. I'll need to change soon.
Oh, yeah! I saw that from italki. I called them out on Twitter about it, and their response was defensive "Oh, we'd never replace our tutors with AI." I'm not sure about Preply, but my profile is inactive.

Does anyone know how to make Facebook show you posts from your friends? Bluesky has the options of "Discover" and "Following." I want to choose "Following" / "Friends" on Facebook rather than seeing nothing but random posts.
What have you heard bad about them? Technically, I work for them because I have an inactive tutor profile, but I think there are better places to work than a language marketplace.
