In ancient southern Italy, there was a settlement known as something like Malies in the local Oscan language, rendered in Greek as Malioenton.
This became Maleventum to the Romans, but that by accident sounded unlucky (like 'evil-wind'). So, it got renamed Beneventum β today, the city of Benevento.

Born on this day in 1591, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, better known as Guercino. Painted dogs. And himself with dogs. Here he's painting one in an allegory of faithful love (nice!) in 1655.

Castles in the landscape. A section of the dramatic ruins at Sheriff Hutton, North Riding; one of my very favourite castles and one which continues to enchant and inspire with every visit.
A rusted helmet, with a broad neck guard and attachment points for a face-guard. A modern replica face-guard is beneath, with decorative eye covers.
