And the argument Tim deploys knowingly or not has been made many times before.

By the fossil fuel industry.

Says someone who actually is involved in installing heat pumps and knows a thing or two about the industry.

I think you just learned that you are out of your depth here. Abigail has been working in the sector for years and knows the details.

Ironically @nestauk.bsky.social is a powerhouse when it comes to heat pump expertise with one of their senior directors correcting Tim publicly under his post. You really cannot make this up.

For those of us who have been working on this professionally for years it is tiring having to engage with the same arguments again and again. The evidence is there if we look for it.

None of this is new. β€œHeat pumps are superior in efficiency to condensing boilers, even if the heat pumps are powered by electricity from a power station burning natural gas.” Not me saying that but the late Prof Sir David MacKay in 2008 in his landmark book. www.withouthotair.com

From the @thecccuk.bsky.social showing that one of the best uses of renewable electricity is to power a heat pump.

Electrification: Using more to emit less Electrification need not increase emissions, argues Jan Rosenow from the Regulatory Assistance Project, if the focus is on making it clean.

This is a terrible and very uninformed take of Tim who should know better.

- heat pumps save around 80% gas today compared to gas boilers

- using renewable electricity is one of the most effective ways to reduce gas consumption

- the marginal emissions argument is deeply flawed (more in comments)

10.03.2026 13:11 πŸ‘ 83 πŸ” 23 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

Tim do you really believe the UK electricity mix is 100% gas?

In reality heat pumps reduce gas demand compared to a boiler by around 80% already today and will approach 90%+ by 2030.

Talk to your colleagues at @nestauk.bsky.social who know better. @katyking2.bsky.social is a heat pump expert.

There is a reason why we do statistically representative surveys. Personal anecdotes are true on their own but not representative of the whole population. If you say a heat pump would not work in your house you don’t understand heat pumps.

Heat pumps are 3-5x more efficient than an oil boiler.

One of the privileges of academic life is collaborating with people you have not worked with before.

A great morning in Cambridge with AndrΓ© Cabrera Serrenho and his research group.

Bonus: stayed at Clare College, sister college of @orieloxford.bsky.social. Both turn 700 this year.

Mostly grid electricity which in the UK will be wind dominated. There’s a pretty good coincidence between wind generation and heat demand as analysis shows.

No not in winter. But depending on size solar can cover a significant share in shoulder seasons. And overall you end up with much less exposure compared to heating oil.

Heating oil prices in the UK have trebled in a week. 2 million homes, no price cap protection, no warning.

Heat pumps + solar are multiple times more efficient, don’t require an oil tank and oil deliveries and are an insurance against such frightening price spikes.

Another Monday morning we wake up to energy market turbulence.

After fossil fuel prices stabilised somewhat towards end of last week they are reaching new highs and could rise further.

Renewable electricity does not as the sun & the wind don’t care much for what happens in the Strait of Hormuz.

Rising energy prices are pushing up inflation, especially in economies dependent on imported fossil fuels.

The durable solution is structural: improve efficiency, accelerate electrification and scale up renewables.

Energy policy is economic policy.

Geopolitical turmoil in the Middle East once again shows that reliance on volatile oil and gas exposes economies to price shocks.

Renewables, electrification and storage offer more stable long term energy costs and stronger energy security.
