With Great Lakes Day approaching, @realshri.bsky.social's column for @planetdetroit.org reminds us that the lakes are "great uniters...perhaps the last bastion of true bipartisanship in Congress." Still, we need our leaders to do more to best protect our water.

Data centers are important for the future of Michigan and Great Lakes' water not only because of their direct and indirect effects on water supply and usage but - perhaps more importantly - because they are exposing flaws in our water protection policies.

In a destructive time for the Great Lakes, advocates can prepare for a reinvention by following at least three core principles, writes Mike Shriberg, a Great Lakes policy expert and director of the University of Michigan Water Center.
Call me crazy but I still believe bi-partisanship and bi-national action is possible on Great Lakes issues. Invasive carp is an example.

Sustainability leadership training in higher education often focuses too much on content/knowledge building and not enough on the "soft skills" like collaboration and communication that sustainability professionals tell us are critical to success. sustainabilityskillset.com/episode-18/?...
The story of the controversy over Enbridge Energy's Line 5 and the implications of its resolution is undertold. That's why I accepted an invitation from The Conversation to write a brief update, focused on how the Trump Administration has altered the trajectory of this complex, critical issue.
When the leading scientists speak with one voice about the criticality of investments in Great Lakes research, and how these investments directly impact our health, wealth and well-being, I hope that we will be heard loud and clear.

βThe water and the resources donβt recognize international boundaries...You canβt manage things like invasive species from only one country and not the other. You canβt manage harmful algal blooms from one country or the other.β - @realshri.bsky.social

It was a privilege to discuss the future of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative with three excellent reporters, including @juanpab.bsky.social, while previewing the new @greatlakesnow.bsky.social segment

It's a sad state of affairs that we need to even question the U.S./Canada relationship in managing the Great Lakes, but there's apparently nothing off the table with this Administration. I appreciate Grist asking for my perspective. grist.org/politics/us-...

As the Trump Administration degrades the ability and capability of the federal government to be a positive force for clean energy and combating climate change, the action will be at the local level. I feel privileged to live in and be able to engage with this action in Ann Arbor.
We're treading on dangerous territory here - degrading our capacity to protect the Great Lakes. My heart goes out to the good people in federal agencies - my friends, colleagues, and collaborators, among others - who have been cruelly and indiscriminately fired.

If our Congresspeople don't stand up for the Great Lakes now, when will they? My point below is that Congressional support for the Great Lakes has to go well beyond the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and into supporting the basic functioning of government and our scientific community.

Shout-out to @realshri.bsky.social , @newelllab.bsky.social , Kat Cameron, Abigail Merolle, and friend-of-the-Grant Dick Norton.
Check out our new paper on resourcing Michigan's coastal resilience managers. With Great Lakes water levels fluctuating more rapidly due to climate change, the needs of coastal managers are high and varied yet have some key common threads.
