For some with mental illness, it’s not always good to talk | Psyche Ideas Well-meaning campaigns urge openness and conversation about mental health struggles. But there are those who cherish silence

We’re often told that speaking up is the path to healing. In this Idea, a philosopher of psychiatry asks us to pause and reconsider that assumption. He explores when talking helps, when it harms, and why making space for quiet can be an act of care in itself

This post made me think of the many times I’ve heard a patient describe their past treatment with misleading metaphorical language, oftentimes inherited from a physician. It’s humbling to remember that our metaphors are carried outside our offices and may shape self understanding for a lifetime.

“For some people, the only time they get to take control over their relationship to medical care is when they decide to reject diagnoses and come off psychiatric medications. When that happens, it is easy to conclude that the problem was diagnosis and treatment to begin with, when in reality the problem was a lack of agency they experienced in clinical care and a system of treatment that often feeds off on it. When people do get the opportunity to engage with diagnoses and treatments in an informed manner and on their own terms, the outcomes are quite different.”

🧠 O que é “doença mental”, afinal?

Por trás dos diagnósticos existem diferentes maneiras de entender o que é estar doente ou saudável. Algumas veem o transtorno como um fato biológico; outras, como uma construção social. .

Opinion | What Kennedy Gets Right, And Wrong, About Antidepressants (Gift Article) Harm from these drugs is real. Let’s not cede the conversation to Kennedy.

My opinion piece in today’s @nytimes.com . I discuss how clinical neglect of medication-related harms has made RFK Jr’s stance on antidepressants appealing to so many and moving the public conversation in a productive direction requires us to remedy this neglect.
