Did you feel like the website was more useful to you (a) when it confirmed your existing beliefs, or (b) when it made you realize that you were wrong about something?

It's hard to visualize the land use of wind, and nuclear doesn't really have a strong relationship between land use and power generation. Also solar is the easiest thing to scale up at the margin, and e-fuel is probably one of the most cost-effective of it (deserts + use overproduction for it).

But that's good, right? You saw your initial belief was wrong, and updated it to be closer to the truth. Seems like the best outcome I could want for an scientific/educational tool :-)

I built this tool to understand the impact of my flights in units that I can actually relate to.
I tried to use the most up-to-date sources I could find and put all the methodology and sources in the second tab. Feedback is welcome, give it a try! 👇https://seirl.github.io/safland/

The tool also shows synthetic e-fuels (solar + electrolysis + air-captured CO₂). Solar is 50x more land-efficient than photosynthesis, but it requires massive infrastructure and is extremely expensive (10-13x more than fossil jet fuel).

You can also check the footprint of your own ticket. A Business Class roundtrip from Paris to San Francisco using Soy-based fuel requires enough land to feed 18 people for a whole year.

The tool compares the land area needed to fuel everything from a single seat to the entire global fleet.
The total land required is huge: with conventional SAFs (corn/soy), you need a farm the size of India!

I built a calculator to visualize the physical constraints of decarbonizing aviation ✈️: seirl.github.io/safland/
We know batteries won't work. We need liquid fuel (SAFs) for long-haul flights. But how much land does growing that fuel actually take?
