Did you know that because roly polies are terrestrial crustaceans and not actual bugs they breathe through adapted gills even though they live out of water.

Yes on the boardwalk
It was in the Hendrie Valley just into Burlington⦠my brain is too used to typing Hamilton on my bird posts.
Happy birthday to one of my favourite haters, Charles Darwin
Two photos of a white-breasted nuthatch in a squat post with wings out and back, front view and read view - their bums are surprisingly colourful!
First time seeing this pose/dance by a white-breasted nuthatch - not sure what the message was, but their bums are surprisingly cute

Read that article about the """writer""" generating 200 books a year with AI and needless to say, I had THOUGHTS
if youβre tired of users telling you to use alt text, JUST FUCKING DO IT. the app automatically detects text on mobile. itβs literally a copy/paste job. communication is a two-way street. some people donβt use their eyes for that. itβs not a big deal. donβt be a dick.
My favourite Christmas song, RIP Chris Rea

Steve isnβt here anymore, but he always posted this picture on Hanukkah so I thought we could carry on his tradition and remember him.

Todayβs xkcd made me cry.
In a good way.

He has his eyes on all his company; he is tender towards the bashful, gentle towards the distant, and merciful towards the absurd; he can recollect to whom he is speaking; he guards against unseasonable allusions, or topics which may irritate; he is seldom prominent in conversation, and never wearisome. He makes light of favours while he does them, and seems to be receiving when he is conferring. He never speaks of himself except when compelled, never defends himself by a mere retort, he has no ears for slander or gossip, is scrupulous in imputing motives to those who interfere with him, and interprets everything for the best. He is never mean or little in his disputes, never takes unfair advantage, never mistakes personalities or sharp sayings for arguments, or insinuates evil which he dare not say out. From a long-sighted prudence, he observes the maxim of the ancient sage, that we should ever conduct ourselves towards our enemy as if he were one day to be our friend.
This reminds me of Cardinal John Henry Newman's book Definition of a Gentleman. I often cite Newman's book because it's so instructive. The term gentleman is so overwrought and frequently abused, but to the degree it means anything at all, I think Newman captures it here:

Nice! Wasnβt it lovely?! I bought sweet crabapple, Riddellβs goldenrod, wood poppy, wild senna, tall
Thimbleweed, upland white aster and few prairie Dropseed grasses. I hope this will become an annual event π
I hope this statement also means the city will fight it / not remove them?
Bloody solar panels, cluttering up the countryside and preventing desertification while providing clean energy and growing food.
A stencilled black painting on a wall, next to a cafe window. A silhouette couple kiss: a man in a top hat and a woman whose hat is blowing away. Red rose petals billow out of their embrace. They are watched by a black and white cat.
The same couple sit on top of an electric junction box, facing in opposite directions. The man now has a feather in his hat. Their cat sits on another box, still gazing at them
The same couple kiss again: the woman is pushing the man - still in his hat- up against a wall/ downpipe; the cat perches on a door frame
The man is now alone, his hat now without a feather, his coat swings out behind him. He has spray-painted a wobbly line on the wall, his cat walks along it.
Loving the work of this artist in Padova: a chap, his girlfriend, his cat and his hat

A landscape view looking out past green plants to water framed by forest on both sides looking ahead to open water with a small island and land with green trees in the distance. The sky is cloudy.
Great photo. Such a lovely spot to stop. π

π― I wish Burlington bylaw officers would make an effort to periodically be on site to warn/fine people who are still feeding the wildlife, despite all the signage. Ruins my nature-zen every time Iβm there.
A light mottled brown and grey bird, a house sparrow, sits amongst backlit pink flowers in early morning warm light.
Our crabapple tree is in bloom and the birds have been checking it out for bugs. Yesterday morning, this female houses sparrow was foraging in the tree and paused for just a moment in the early morning backlight.
