“We fund sequencing instead of remediation.” Powerful speech by @kstsosie.bsky.social @aaas.org on how science needs to focus not on speed but on perseverance and accountability. We can learn so much from Indigenous scientists like Dr. Tsosie. We need more of them.

Forgot my ID at check-in — thankfully this event sign vouched for me 🙂
If you’re at the @aaas.org meeting tomorrow (Fri 2/13, 4–5 PM) at Phoenix Convention Center, see why “The Future of #Science is #Indigenous”
Genomics, #AI, #health — what we build matters. How we build it matters more. #AAASmtg
The badge game at the @aaas.org American Association for the Advancement of Science Annual Meeting is next level! These are among the most creative I’ve seen at a scientific meeting. 🧬 #AAASmtg

A+ response, AJ @ajhooks.bsky.social ! This could be the start of 2026 new wardrobe goals
As U.S. official #public #health policy continues its regression toward anti- #science, I’m once again wondering whether a plague doctor mask counts as business casual for the start of the semester, right as the undergrad viral onslaught begins.
I’m sure someone will have feelings about the mask.

Presentations at SACNAS #NDiSTEM2025
Some members of the Tsosie Lab for #Indigenous #Genomic #Data Equity & #Justice are so happy to present @sacnas.bsky.social in Columbus, OH #NDiSTEM2025! Here's for an amazing Friday lineup across #IDSov. Hope to see you soon! @d4itdr.bsky.social @caterpillar-coevo.bsky.social #SACNAS #STEM
This was one of my favorite parts of #ASHG25. Should have been a plenary!
"Data for us, by us"
So many underrepresented minorities could learn from this model. I dream of eventually turning @beyondxandy.bsky.social into something similar for trans people

"Consequently, the Indigenous data sovereignty movement formed to protect collective interests in data governance and ensure that benefits derived from data are directed back to Indigenous peoples"
Heck yeah! @joseph-yracheta.bsky.social @kstsosie.bsky.social
Thanks! A Tohono O'odham artist by the name of Alfonso Chavez designed it for us. It's a stylized thunderbird (a Diné motif) with a version of fire colors for the nucleotides. Correct handedness for the DNA helix!

I am asking around. But I am also happy to send a PDF via email me (krystal.tsosie AT asu DOT edu)!!
Out today via @natgenet.nature.com, the first federally funded #Tribal #data repository, a revolutionary approach to data management and applied/operationalization of IDSov @d4itdr.bsky.social. Also, if you are at #ASHG25, come see us this morning in 205ABC

Welcome to #ASHG25! As our President Sarah Tishkoff just noted, next year for the first time the ASHG exec cmte will be all women. Glad to have anyone and everyone participating in this society now and in the future.
For those interested in #Indigenous #Genomics and #ASHG25 in Boston, here are some interested posters/talks/events coming out of the Tsosie Lab, @nativebio.bsky.social, and @d4itdr.bsky.social. For those looking for Friday plans, attend our Ancillary Event, debuting a #Tribal #data repository!
INTERNATIONAL SURVEY ON TREE OF LIFE
My PhD student Jocelyn Cheé-Santiago (Binnizá) is leading an online survey on scientific practices re: biodiversity, biocollections, conservation. If you work in these areas, we'd appreciate your insights. 10-15 mins. Details

If you are attending the ASHG Annual Meeting in Boston this year, and you would like to hear about advances in Indigenous digital sovereignty and Tribal Nation-led health research, please sign up for our limited seating engagement on Friday, Oct 17th. Lunch provided: tinyurl.com/5aj9544f
In my Bio & Soc class, UGs act as reviewers/editors as a mock peer review. They see
-difficulty finding responsive reviewers (& w/o COI)
-variable quality reviews
-issues matching reviewers to article
Goal is to unveil realities of science evaluation (& hopefully train better reviewers). This helps
Agree to all. Funneling between reviewers accepting papers that cite them often starts with editors’ invite to review. As a guest editor, I also see compounding that, due to time, many reviewers recommend accepting w/o seemingly in-depth review. Many factors contribute to the observed outcome
Just a conference banner image that says "I'm speaking!"
🌟 Exciting! I’m presenting at the Featured Symposium entitled "Authentic Engagement Beyond the Lab: Engaging Communities in the Future of #Genetic #Medicine" #ASHG25! October 15 in Boston! Plus two of my students are presenting posters! See you then! Register: meetings.ashg.org/event/ASHG25...
“The AI in the study probably prompted doctors to become over-reliant on its recommendations, ‘leading to clinicians becoming less motivated, less focused, and less responsible when making cognitive decisions without AI assistance,’ the scientists said in the paper.”
