For the first time, the Naval Service will have clear legal powers to protect Irish waters, without first referring to another agency (Coast Guard, Customs etc). Fairly crazy this is only happening now but there you go

The new armour programme will transform the Irish Army from a light infantry force, with limited armoured elements, to an heavily mechanised force equipped with modern armour and powerful weaponry. Where the money will come from is another matter.
