U.S. court allows state bans on gender-affirming care for adults in unprecedented ruling While bans on trans youth’s care have been numerous in recent years, this is the first to restrict care for transgender adults.

NEWS: It was never about the children.

Transgender adults now face care restrictions after the ruling of the federal appeals court in Richmond, Virginia.

'Iran Is Not Gaza': Read Arundhati Roy's Scathing Speech on the US-Israeli War Exclusive: The award-winning Indian novelist warns that the world is on the brink of nuclear calamity and economic collapse, and laments her own government's gutlessness.

β€œThe unprovoked and illegal attack by the US and Israel on Iran... is, of course, a continuation of the US-Israeli genocide in Gaza. It’s the same old genocidaires using the same old playbook. Murdering women and children. Bombing hospitals. Carpet bombing cities. And then playing the victim.β€œ

I mean, is this anything other than intellectualism dressed up in new clothes? Also, I don't think the 'nothing is good' of Nihilism means quite what this author seems to be making it out to mean.

FBI warns Iran aspired to attack California with drones in retaliation for war: Alert The warning came in a bulletin that was reviewed by ABC News.

The FBI thinks you are fucking stupid. Iran has zero capability to cross the Pacific and sea-launch a drone attack on California. This is too fucking dumb for me to comment on further.

This has been pointed out many times (including by Evan!), but it bears repeating that this is the same playbook used to sow suspicion on vaccinations and the existence of climate change.

Trad quant soc sci research finds norms in populations; AI modeled focus groups find vibes in past data. This is the diff in tracking a crime rate or a birth rate vs claiming that there are eg crime vibes in Walgreens or the NYC subway or low birth vibes among millennials etc etc

To restore democracy and create a fairer, safer, greener world, we need massive taxes on the ultra-rich. As in the 1940s. People get confused about this. The main purpose of such taxes is *not* to raise revenue. The point is to stop the few dominating the many. It's an essential democratic measure.

Things are not going to get better as long as oligarchs rule the roost in our democracies | George Monbiot If we want the kind of fair, functioning state Britain saw post-1945, we need to take on the economic powers that wrecked it, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

From 1941 to 1952 in the UK, the top rate of income tax was 98%. A luxury goods purchase tax introduced in 1940 later rose to 100%.
Result? The share of incomes captured by the richest 0.1% fell from 7% in 1937 to just over 1% in 1975. That's what we need today. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Bombing Campaigns Do Not Bring About Democracy. Nor Does Regime Change Without a Plan. Just look at Iraq in 1991.

No sign of regime instability and military history 101 tells us that no one has ever bombed a country into democracy carnegieendowment.org/emissary/202...

I know people are very sensitive about the use of the word β€œgenocide” but the attempts to medically eliminate trans children is very clearly meets the standard because they are trying to eliminate a population and also they know some of those kids are going to kill themselves

It feels like vagueness, no memory retention, no ability to think on the spot, and no ability to articulate what one is thinking are kind of key hallmarks of our time, and everyone seems to want to make it worse

As many people said would happen, sounds like our failure to stop US politicians supporting a genocide will now turn into committing one ourselves.

If one’s preferred path to β€œliberation” is war, sanctions that systematically destroy social infrastructure, or aerial bombardment of densely populated urban centers, then one is in practice saying that the lives of those populations are expendable.

Al Jazeera cracked this "enigma":

This school had many daughters of military officers and soldiers. The idea was to attract them to the school, strike it to draw in rescuers and relatives, and then strike it again to kill them.

All these old ingredients plus years of the superadded claim that "we" (IE, qua the unholy alliance of Greater Israel / Greater North America) are the real ones under nuclear threat from *them.* Us, the only nation to ever drop the bomb (twice!), and Israel, which has refused to sign the NPT.

"The Oriental doesn't put the same high price on life as does a Westerner," pronounced General Westmoreland in '74. "Life is plentiful. Life is cheap in the Orient." Yesterday the President insisted we're in a war of annihilation against people who "behead babies" and "cut women in half."
