This comes back to voters too in that we* clearly do not care all that much about SB, or else we would have contested races. But no SB accountability --> no CO accountability.

I disagree. I think SB miscalculated here. They thought they could trick a bunch of people into yelling about teachers, but it turns out the only people paying attention are REALLY paying attention, so we saw the game for what it was. And now people are rightfully pissed.

I actually think the surprise thing is a red herring, and probably actually refers to council being surprised by the press release touting the victory*, not by the CBA budget line item, which was always listed in the over-budget "budget" SB submitted. The problem is the gamesmanship.

This is exactly the bad faith council is rightfully calling out with this action. It is not “partnership” to turn in an over budget ask, announce your CBA with a little asterisk that says “if council allows,” and then tell the public the only path to your actual budget is firing teachers.

And that was that budget the size council told them to make it? You’re missing an important fact here.

The problem the proposal is solving is that the school board’s budget is $5.6m over plan, and when asked for potential cuts, the only potential cuts the board is giving are student facing ones. By working in categories council will bring much more transparency and clarity to the conversation.
