Not enough people are talking about the pitching usage rules & the MLB teams who want their players (especially pitchers) to get their work in.
You can't just pitch your best pitchers all tournament; part of this is the pitfalls of hosting the event in March.
They went all-out vs Mexico & weren't expecting to need to do it again tonight. There are a lot of pitching usage rules & the pitching plan is harder to change in these games.
If he wasn't expecting to need certain guys, he wasn't going to them on short notice when things went haywire.
On DeRosa and the WBC, important to note some of the player usage is because it's still spring training and players need work. Teams send pitchers to the WBC with the knowledge their players will get their work in
Even if DeRosa knew USA could be eliminated, he still needed to get guys work.

Wonder if they put Nico at the 10 and give Maxi more of a backup/spot-starter role, but you're probably right that until we see Maxi coming off the bench, we have to assume he's likely a starter. Hard to imagine a guy that started all 34 games last year is suddenly going to be on the bench.
