Quick plug for our new resource, the Drosophila Species Stock Exchange. This is a database and mailing list that documents species currently in culture and the labs holding them. If you want to know more or sign up then please get in touch. See attached for more info and please share!

The Hopkins Lab (hopkins-lab.com) at the University of Florida is looking to recruit a postdoc to work on the genetics of organ function and evolution across Drosophila and beyond. Please visit tinyurl.com/vcsjpmzz or email me for more info. And please RT or send to anyone who might be interested!

Lab meeting field trip this morning! The undergrads explored the field site. I’m thrilled to work with a great team of β€˜28s who will be on campus for sophomore summer next year and can expand their lab research to the mesocosms! @dartmouthartsci.bsky.social #fieldworkfun

Thanks! We’re focused on courtship & piloting video capture in key locations of each mesocosm throughout the day. We also built portable versions of our courtship rig to quantify in nature. All this paired with high throughput courtship screens in the lab to dissect what traits & genes are evolving.

And of course I have to thank the amazing field assistant Wallace the Wonderdoodle. Like his namesake, he is fascinated by natural selection, particularly in the context of beautiful courtship displays.

I am very thankful for the support from the Department of Biological Sciences and Dartmouth @dartmouthartsci.bsky.social for supporting my interdisciplinary research vision! We are recruiting Post Docs and Grad Students to join this exciting endeavor!

We also built in mechanisms to control climate (e.g., temperature and RH) so we can study rapid evolution to seasonal change as well as test hypotheses about the role of specific climatic variables in adaption.

The mesocosms each have electricity inside so we can capture video live in real time in addition to behavior screens using portable behavior rigs we’ve built to quantify behavior in nature.

What a summer it’s been! We built our Drosophila experimental evolution mesocosms and are running our first experiment! I’m ecstatic to be able to pair our study genetic and neural mechanisms of behavior evolution in the lab with how behaviors evolve in nature!

#ESEB2025 @emilylbehrman.bsky.social on a great cuticular hydrocarbon-based mate preference system in Drosophila: a single molecule secreted by melanogaster females is sufficient to induce melanogaster males to mate simulans females, and to put simulans males off simulans females. Cool.

Drosophila Genetic Database The Drosophila Genetic Database, FlyBase, is on the brink of collapse due to the sudden termination of the FlyBase NIH grant, which includes salaries for 5 literature curators based at the University ...

Flybase lost all of the NIH support overnight - it is a disaster for the community. Please consider donating. I just did! www.philanthropy.cam.ac.uk/give-to-camb...
