It's one thing to grind on your own project, another thing to bring in someone from the outside.
If you hire an external artist, you owe them their full rate.
And if they're generous enough to give you a discount upfront, you'd better be negotiating a 'success bonus' for when the project hits.
But the moment you move into commercial dev (with strict deadlines& prof expectation) the rules change. Every man-hour and every $ must be accounted for.
Whether the money comes from an investor today or from sales tomorrow, everyone deserves their fair, calculated share of the value they created.
Its absolutely okay to work all team for free, for a fun during free time. You're a team of equals building a passion project on a hobby basis, with no pressure and no deadlines, that's your choice. You're all in it together. None of you get money from it, the project can stay for free for everyone.
And then people wonder why gamedev is going to hell....
Some waste millions on trash, while others expect the world to work for a "thank you".
Honest work = honest pay.
Simple as that.
Choosing NOT to exploit people isn't "laziness." It's professional ethics!!!
In my region, there are $$$ studios that hire vOlUnTeArS or pay high-skilled specialists way below market,promising % (just 50$) after release, if they stay in the studio.
Some other studios pay only when the entire project is finished and its rights are given to the studio. Devs get only 100-200$!
Revenue share is often just as bad. What if the project flops? Are you going to pay someone $3 for weeks of work?
Of course I will pay from my wallet, ofc, I'll have less because its my fault that I failed in math or KPIs.
But they are going and called this exploitation an OpPoRnTuNiTy...
I'd rather ship a game without VA at all than demand an actor work for free without a legal agreement.
I can work for free on my own project because I'm the one taking the risk. My team can join me in attempt to make a dream game. But why should I expect an actor to give their labor for eXpOsUrE??
