Last Night at the Telegraph Club is fantastic- adding this to my to-read list now! π
Anyone in skyland have a negative school library experience from childhood? I'd love to hear what didn't work for people to reflect on my own practice and try to do better in 2025. So many people love us- who can report a PERSONAL student experience that wasn't so great? #tlchat π #schoollibraries
When I made this account over a year ago I somehow set up a "school library" feed for myself and I love it- it shows me so many comments that strangers leave on random post about how their school library was wonderful when they were a kid. Got me wondering... π #libraries
DVD of Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special
I just checked out a copy from the library yesterday! It's not christmas without it!
Sigh. So are community members also writing school curriculum? Mapping out roads for townships? Designing public buildings like courthouses? Or is that somehow different in your mind?
Parents and/or community deciding isn't feasible in 99% of libraries. That's why we have experts in fields- to trust in the knowledge and training they have. Being a librarian is being an expert in resource curation and is a lot more work than most people realize. We love purchase suggestions tho!
In a perfect world- licensed school librarians decide. That's what they're trained to do. They have teaching degrees plus the equivalent of/and an MLIS degree. They make sure selections fit in with the collection development policy, there's budget $, purchases support the curriculum, and so forth.
It's fun to use those comments to build up my block list!
Since that seems to be an honest question, I'll respond. There's a big difference between selection and censorship. This law doesn't mean nothing can ever be removed from a library (if it functions like the IL law does).
Our responses to the biased article the Chicago Tribune posted about IL's book banning law. Happy to share a pdf with anyone. π
I had to bow out last minute today so I can't wait to see what is shared from this event!
I hate that the state looks at attendance as a metric of how well a school performs. Some kids just don't thrive in this environment, there's illness, mental health, etc. We are forced to waste so much time and money trying to convince kids to COME to school instead of meeting them where they are.
If you read one article this week about why all schools should have a library and licensed librarian, make it this one. Wow. π
you (the patron) should be able to turn that if the circ system is set up properly. Most libraries I'm familiar with delete records on return so that even with a subpoena, there is nothing to provide. Interesting yours has chosen not to do so. Don't mislead people into "all libraries do this."
Yes. I have those three plus other works on different beliefs in my HS library. But the various school boards don't think of that (and probably have also let go their trained and licensed librarians). π
A sign on the library desk that says "how many books have been checked out this school year?" In front of it is a flip chart that currently shows the number 3,821.
Want to keep this a happy place? Don't engage the trolls. I've discovered it's so easy to look at my "school libraries" feed and simply block anyone who's commenting things like "that book shouldn't be in the school library!" Keep the site working for you! #tlchat π
Elementary School Librarians:
Do you all use the Dewey Decimal system for organizing books in your library?
I'm asking for a manuscript that I'm revising. Please REPOST if you see this. I seriously need to know the answer.
Thanks!

Ice-T from Law and Order SVU looking disappointed with the words "that's messed up"
Watching old L&O SVU episodes. They find a library book next to a body and take it to the high school, where the library staff lady scans it and says "oh this was checked out by Michael [somebody]." *glances at computer* "He's absent today."
So many things wrong with that 15 second scene π π
The graphic novel version of Wait Til Helen Comes is a huge hit in my HS library!
Lots of new followers. Let's talk...#SchoolLibraries
School libraries are essential to student education but...
There is no money for them.
They are only used by the English Department.
Not all students use them.
We have digital.
Thoughts?

Here's a school librarian list! bsky.app/profile/elis...
Hooray! Thanks!
Anyone have a starter pack to get pictures of cats on my feed? Not AI images, just cats being cute and/or assholes, to fit in between all the lovely library and literacy posts I've got going on. Picture of a cat at the Tower of London last summer for tax.
Oh goddammit, this fucking pest. Nip this in the bud, all of you block and so not engage. This guy engages in targeted harassment of libraries and librarians for defending intellectual freedom.
Are these for hair and where do I get them?? (Also, welcome from another school librarian!)
