Symposia π
There will be 29 themed symposia and one open general symposium at the upcoming IPC7.
π’ Today we highlight:
β¨Advances on the histology of the mineralised tissues of vertebratesβ¨
Cross-section images of the leg bone of an extinct flightless bird, with close-ups taken through a microscope.
Bone histology of phorusrhacids (terror birds) indicates rapid, uninterrupted growth (typical of most modern birds but unlike flightless paleognaths such as ostriches and kiwi): anatomypubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... πͺΆπ§ͺ (π·Dreyer et al.)

New Publication Alert!
Our new paper on black bear bone histology is out today in the Journal of Anatomy!

Experimental design. After 5 days of latency, all mice received a standard distraction protocol of 0.2βmm/12βh. In vivo micro-CT and histology were performed at different time points during the DO process, as indicated by arrows.
Distraction osteogenesis is used to treat limb length discrepancy and bone nonunion, deformities, and defects. Sishun Pu & coauthors developed a 4D time-lapse morphometry method to quantify bone formation and resorption: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Our new paper in Bone Reports explores the potential of archaeological and palaeontological specimens to contribute to biomedical research and advance our understanding of bone remodelling processes, and further highlights avenues for future interdisciplinary collaboration in bone histology studies.

Yesterday was World Osteoporosis Day, a reminder that bone health depends on more than calcium.
Polluted indoor air can weaken bones through inflammation and toxins.
Clean air may be one of the quiet protectors of strength as we age.

Osteoporosis is often seen as a disease that primarily affects older women. But older men can have brittle bones too, and lack of awareness and testing for osteoporosis can result in painful and life-threatening bone fractures. bit.ly/3WPsorn
Huge congratulations to our Honours student Bella Pearce, who submitted her Honours thesis today! Her thesis investigated femur intra-cortical bone remodelling variation with age and social status in a sample of medieval females.
Get your abstracts submitted! Our team has already done so and we look forward to going to Auckland for #ashb2025
We are pleased to offer Student Conference Support Grants for our 2025 meeting. If you are an ASHB student member and intend on presenting either a paper or poster, consider applying for financial support here: forms.gle/77WCN3ym3fGQ...
