"Ko tarau hāngi ahau" is a great phrase 🤣😂🤣
I often think about innovation blips in history.... Things which pop up and go Tapes and CDs are an example
I've been thinking about retail. My grandparents ordered via mail order, or an occasional trip to "town", my kids order online. I do now.
Big retail is an innovation which is dying
That is a good one
It's been a week.
My brother is having brain surgery and my cousin passed away of brain bleed on Monday.
I feel done.
Just quietly. Files a PG. Won at mediation. There was a confidential settlement which may or may not have included a clause to cover all my costs
Oh, my goodness, this is a huge breakthrough in cancer research. This is another example of why it is crucially important to fund basic scientific research.

But I understand the advantages of traditional publishing
I was lucky enough to have a publisher provide an editor.
My earnings from my written work are minimal.
There is no bad faith. There is no mention of "a living wage" in your post, and you doubled down on editors being "snobby" because they want paying.
I'm sure no one gets rich being an editor. They have bills to pay like us all.
You will! How could you not!
The sentiment applies to writers as well
Anyone commissioning a writer should pay for their work.
Don't expect professionals to work cheap or free. If you can't afford their rates, self edit / swap with another writer.
That's my comment.
And no. There is no assumption that authors are rich. I'm not an editor, I am a published writer. I am not rich. I have a day job
If anyone is using a service then pay the person for their skills and time. The analogy is that you pay other skilled services you choose to use.
If you're writing as a business then costs should be factored in. If it doesn't work then your business isn't profitable.
If you're writing for hobby then you self edit or ask a friend or save up. You don't expect professionals to support you.
Why should they be sympathetic?
Do they assume you are rich or are they offering a paid service which utilises their time and expertise?
Why would you expect a skilled professional to work cheap or free? Or for that matter anyone skilled or unskilled?
Probably yes.
Editing and publishing is not a recent development
The editors are working. It's their job.
It doesn't matter if you're self publishing or not.
We pay plumbers and mechanics and hairdressers, why would we not pay proofreaders and editors?
My partner asked her if she'd like a hug She did
He wrapped his arms around her and she softened
When he let her go she looked so much lighter, and left the cafe lighter with a smile
Shame on me for judging, it is the little things that help.

💯 love this
I have a lil story.
We were meeting a friend in a cafe. We're all Māori so it's hugs and mihi kihi and noise all around.
There was a grumpy older woman arms folded watching us. Waiting for a coffee with a sour expression
I judged her as a grumpy old boomer

My reminder to myself is do good
Be kind. Help others in a way which is more than reasonable. Listen to their stories and experiences.
Keep putting pressure on injustice
Keep questioning. Keep pushing for transparency.
And give those who need it my love.
Because if I don't. Who will.
But then I reflected
I thought of South Africa in the 80s and the pressure on nuclear testing in the South Pacific.
Of the small kindness I have received and given
Of Pa Moana Jackson and the work he did
We cannot keep the world just but we can make change, in little ways and bigger ways.
As much as we like to pretend we aren't. The status quo is only maintained by our complicity.
Religion is the opiate of the masses
Television is the opiate of the masses
Social media is the opiate of the masses
But on reflection while the world is fucked.
And power structures are exactly the same as they have been for centuries, maintaining the imbalance.
Screwing over the poor, indigenous and POC.
And we're all complicit as we complain about it.

He was the intro to my thread on existential resignation. But I stopped being cynical.

Here's Squib again.
She is often cross about the weather.
Last night her boyfriend Rastus, came into the house and shouted loudly for her. He needs to learn how to whisper.
I do understand though because, l👀k at her...she is exceptionally gorgeous.
*it's not gonna be like Venice. But there is hope.
And plant trees now.
Also here's a plug.
I work with my friend in this area. He's the postdoc fellow. If you need good honest help or advice. Hit me up. DMs open.
But as a positive. Look at Venice. We can live with water. We just need to change the way we live*
We can see the future coming. We need to heed these warnings.
2. Inertia. We need to act now. But the human condition means we only act when it is too uncomfortable to stay with the status quo.
We've had multiple deaths this year because of climate effects.
But what number can we live with. What level of deaths will make us act.
50, 100, 1000, 500,000?
The barriers to adaptation is two things.
1. Those who are hoarding money & power
Why? Because it will affect their income. It means devolving power.
