worth remembering, David Lynch directed “fix your hearts or die” specifically at transphobes. it wasn’t a generic “no mean people allowed” statement, it was said by his Twin Peaks character in defense of a trans woman he cared for and deeply respected.

Mia could have, potentially, been the next generation's Ada Wong, as this morally compromised double agent type.
Instead, nah, she's relegated to damsel and mommy, respectively.

Mia's *kinda* one of the main villains of the game, in her own roundabout fashion. I'm with Dorian, it's both irritating the way the series downplays the moral severity of Mia's actions... and shunts Mia's character entirely come Village.

... tongue-in-cheek, right? Those wrongs don't include "making bio-weapons for rich white guys" and "inflicting said bio-weapons on war-torn nations, almost certainly predominantly brown, from the comfort of a western nation."

Sidebar, I was not aware until @doriandawes.bsky.social had told me there was a whole... mini-fandom around Mia Winters, of all people, trying to spin her actions into something more heroic and noble than they actually were?
Gang, when we say, "I also support women's wrongs," you know that's...

"I’m fascinated by the choice in perspective here. Leon’s sections in Requiem are designed and encouraged to be played in third person over-the-shoulder perspective, while Grace’s are designed for first person. We are meant to watch the spectacle that is Leon in action, while Grace is the POV character. We are Grace. She is designed to be someone that women would want to embody, and Leon as someone they would lust over.
I’m glad Capcom has finally realized that women exist and play their games. I am frustrated though that in the game’s storyline, Grace’s character arc is tied to that of becoming a caregiver. We see her rescue a young girl named Emily, and become a mother or big sister figure to her, mirroring Claire’s stumbling into motherhood with Sherry back in RE2. I’m sure this was done as part of the nostalgia-fest that is Requiem, a celebration of Resident Evil history, but it is tiring to have a compelling and interesting new female character, only for her to once again get slotted into the role of maternal figure. It speaks to the lack of imagination this franchise has in the ways that it views women.
Like I said, I love Resident Evil. I think it gets a lot of things right. I love how accurately it understands the mindset of corporate fascists with their obsessions with eugenics, classism, and techno-futurism. It’s a biting piece of criticism that has aged shockingly well. It unfortunately also likes to trip and fall on its own face, especially where gender issues are concerned.
Many of these things are not solely tied to the fault of Resident Evil. For as much as I praise survival horror for being the most feminine coded videogame genre, it has a lot of baggage in this area. We can have games that stand as masterpieces of feminist critique that then have DLCs and unlockable costumes so players can then goon to the sexy lady protagonists in subsequent playthroughs. "
And, finally, regarding 8 and Grace, a character whom I think might be one of my favourite playable MC's in the series?

I'd like to highlight a few passages from the essay that beautifully illustrate my own similar issues with Resident Evil, a series I otherwise adore to pieces.
They frustrate me, well, precisely because I adore it to pieces.

this is one of the most stark differences between american and japanese horror.
a lot of american horror from the 80s onwards kind of celebrates individual cunning and tenacity in the face of evil. a running theme of japanese horror is people who tried their hardest, were kind and good, and died

By the way, if someone is serving for the United States military, it is a bit old fashioned to say "thank you for your service", perhaps try instead: "you are a traitor to the human race."
