Probably because she has dedicated her entire career to public service in Maine and is one of a small number of Dems in Maine who has run for statewide office in Maine and won. I prayed that she would run. I supported her last two opponents but neither had the statewide support Mills has.

Yep. I just signed up to help on her web page. I still think Mills has this, but there's nothing wrong with having options. I think GP is going to fall as quickly as he ascended the minute negative attack ads start.

What is going on in the Middle East is very important but has not been even near a top issue for her as governor of Maine.

Yeah seriously. Fwiw years ago I worked for a state politician (in another state) who was Jewish and worked closely with AIPAC and was also very progressive and loved by progressives. The idea that Janet Mills is an AIPAC politician is laughable to me.

I didn't realize Genevieve McDonald was involved in his campaign. She is phenomenal. She was a legislator/lobster boat captain! And if she's saying this, I believe her.

Fwiw Collins scraped by during her last re election which was also a pro-blue year. She gets a lot of support from moderate Dems and independents in Maine.

Also progressives do not give Mills enough credit for what she has done to increase access to healthcare in Maine. Esp women's healthcare. It's been one of her top issues. For folks for whom universal healthcare is often a litmus test, it feels like a double standard.

Who says she's not campaigning? I have personally been outreached to by her campaign and I see her doing meet ups all around Maine. Just because she's a good pantries and baked bean suppers instead of breweries doesn't mean she's not campaigning. Also fwiw she is also governor of a state right now.

labor organizing, gun control, and recognition of Maine's native people. But she doesn't get enough credit from progressives on healthcare, which she has expanded access to in Maine, women's healthcare in particular. And she has been a staunch advocate for trans rights.

I don't agree with it all, but I get why people aren't in love with Mills and are shopping around for someone exciting and new. She is tried and true. She is not as exciting and youthful. She is steady and gets shit done. She has been problematic on some issues that progressives cares about:

to him talk about his views and how they've changed and it feels authentic to them. He is an exciting candidate who brings an energy they like. Honestly it's bringing Bernie in the Dem primary vibes.

There's a strong visceral reaction to the perception that people "from away" are telling us what to do and general skepticism of expertise. Also fwiw I know quite a few people who are smart and whose judgement I trust telling me that they have talked to him or gone to an event and listened

A lot of people have explained this. Maine has a long tradition of electing independent candidates who don't fit the traditional Democrat or Republican mold. There's a strong libertarian streak that comes into play on the left and right.

There's no reason not to sign her petition to get her on the ballot. She has more relevant experience than Platner at least.

We have ranked choice voting, so there really isn't an issue with having more candidates. And honestly, if Platner can be taken seriously as a candidate, then she can. She has more relevant experience than he does.

Not a Nazi. She's already ahead of the game!

Man I hate Chuck Schumer as much as the next guy but the logic of "can the current governor of Maine who won by double digits in her last election beat Susan Collins" should not be difficult for people to understand.

Before we had candidates I was in the "I'd vote for a shoe against Susan Collins" camp. Now that we have candidates I'm in the "I'll vote for anyone who's not Susan Collins OR a Nazi" camp. The bar is so so low. #Maine #MEpolitics

And for those complaining that Mills is too old, you're under 70, so you theoretically meet the qualifications of everyone kavetching about the other two candidates here on bluesky 😆😆😆
