On Friday evening, MKAS member Theresa gave a talk on where the chemical elements around us come from.
It was a thought-provoking journey from the birth of the Universe to the gold in our jewellery.

At Friday’s meeting, Pierre shared news of the newly discovered sun grazing comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) a Kreutz comet which will soon pass extremely close to the Sun, and outlined several possible outcomes . As always with comets, we will watch and wait. If it survives, we'll see it in April.

We were pleased to welcome members and visitors to our recent meeting, where Dr Mike Leggett gave a wide-ranging talk on astronomy and the history of exploration. He traced how early astronomers and navigators used the night sky to understand their position on Earth.

A really enjoyable meeting on Friday, several new members and visitors came along to see whether the club was for them. It was great to welcome so many newcomers, with plenty of questions and discussion, finishing with refreshments and a chat a very relaxed sociable evening enjoyed by all.

Four of us from MKAS headed to a dark site and were greeted by the Plough, Jupiter and Orion. We’d barely sat down when three meteors flashed by.

Over 90 minutes we saw ~20, from faint flickers to bright streaks. One was slow and red, another even crossed a telescope’s view
