Outdated, Underpaid and Unequal: Why and How the UKโ€™s Parental Leave System Must Change How to design better parental leave policies that support equal sharing of care and gender equality.

What is the problem with the current parental leave system? And how could we design it so it better supports the equal sharing of care and gender equality? Read more here: www.wbg.org.uk/article/outd...

Parental leave is one of the key levers the govt has to support more equal distribution of unpaid work in the home which lies at the heart of gender inequality. The Govt's in-depth review of parental leave is encouraging and a crucial opportunity to get this right.

Day one rights to take parental leave is also undoubtedly a huge win for women, and parents in general. But we know there's much more to be done: current rates of statutory pay and allowance for mothers and fathers & second parents are too low, and paternity leave is too short.

New Employment Rights Act โ€˜a huge boost for women in the workplaceโ€™ Government says new rights for parental leave and sick pay will increase equality and economic growth

Women are still the majority of workers in low paid or precarious work in our economy - making up 77% of those on low weekly pay.

They have the most to benefit from new workersโ€™ rights laws, especially from new day one rights to sick pay.

The Employment Rights Act is making important steps towards expanding access to flexible working. But the govt should go further by introducing a flexible working advertising duty so that all jobs are advertised flexibly, except in circumstance where it is not reasonably feasible.

Flexible work also plays a critical role in supporting Disabled women and those living with chronic health conditions. For many, rigid working patterns are a barrier to participation. Options such as remote working can be the difference between staying in employment or being pushed out altogether.

How hybrid roles and flexible working are widening womenโ€™s wealth gaps Visibility is only part of the problem as flexible working roles paying lower salaries can compound wealth issues over time

โ€œThe issue here is not flexible work. The lack of access to it in senior, well-paid roles is." Our deputy director Dr Sara Reis explains how restricting flexible working would only make it harder for women to stay in work. The real challenge is ensuring flexibility across all levels of seniority.

The Invisibility of Migrant Women in National Data Migration is often described using broad, genderโ€‘neutral data, even though it is a gendered process. Looking at data collection across employment, health, and housing, this blog explains how migrant w...

Why are migrant women invisible in data?

While migration is deeply gendered, national data often reduces complex lives to "overly simple categories." From housing to healthcare, if you aren't counted, you don't count in policy planning.

Under strain: How NHS pressures are deepening health inequalities for women Health inequalities in the UK are not only about income or geography. They are also shaped by gender - affecting different groups of women in distinct ways.

These gendered inequalities donโ€™t exist in isolation. They intersect with inequalities related to class, race, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity, creating even greater barriers to access, treatment and outcomes for many groups of women.

Women often experience different health conditions, use services differently, and are more likely to work in health and social careโ€”meaning they feel the impact of system pressures first and hardest.

NHS pressures are widening health inequalities for women.

Women make up the majority of the NHS workforce and its patients, so underfunding and system strain have deeply gendered consequences.

What will the Middle East conflict mean for UK energy bills? As conflict escalates in the Middle East, experts have weighed in on how prices โ€“ particularly energy bills โ€“ could be affected in the UK

"Now is the time for the chancellor to lay the groundwork for reforming the governmentโ€™s fiscal framework to strengthen our social infrastructure and economy in the long term, and shore up our resilience to such external shocks."

- our Executive Director Dr Daniella Jenkins in @bigissue.com

Global events have increased the urgency to invest in our economyโ€™s foundations, says Womenโ€™s Budgetย Group โ€œThe real barriers to the level of investment needed are a fiscal framework that is not fit for purpose.โ€ Dr Daniella Jenkins responds to Chancellor Rachel Reevesโ€™ Spring Forecast. The Chancellor's decision to stick to a single fiscal event this year brings a welcome measure of stability after the rumour-fuelled chaos of last autumnโ€™s Budget. Falling inflation and lower energy bills will bring some relief - especially for low-income families - and show that targeted action to bring down the cost of living works. But the US and Israelโ€™s military action in Iran and the escalating conflict make it only too real how shifting geopolitics continue to create a volatile external economic environment.

Now is the time to reform the fiscal framework and invest in social infrastructure to build long-term resilience.

Underinvestment isnโ€™t gender-neutral โ€” women pay through lost earnings, poorer health and unpaid labour.

Dr Daniella Jenkins responded to todayโ€™s Spring Forecast

Thereโ€™s a disconnect between slightly better economic indicators and how people actually feel about their living standards. Rising oil and gas prices risk pushing up inflation and everyday costs.

The current fiscal framework fuels a vicious cycle of short-term fixes, and trapped us in a permanent debate about how to plug a fiscal gap instead of how to meet the countryโ€™s needs. It's time to re-think this approach.

Great to be part of this coalition calling to review the OBR's brief to unlock much-needed investment.

Under-investment in public services is not gender-neutral. Womenโ€™s unpaid work compensates for the govtโ€™s failure to invest in social infrastructure, and they pay with their own financial security
