For Black scholars, "rigor" has too often meant surviving racial harm in the academy. I wrote a draft piece on racial epistemicide, linguistic policing, and African American history this #BlackHistoryMonth.

This insight is so important. Thank you for writing this incredible piece... Oh how I wish my teachers had been educated on GLP growing up. I reference GLP in my thesis writing, as I think it is important to embrace ALL of our ways of being, knowing, speaking. Your series is so empowering; thank you
This is such a transformative piece of writing - moving, affirming, real. Educators, do read and heed this wisdom!
Academia is for all of us.
Fortresses were never meant to last forever.
The humanities' disconcerting position on AI and the serious threat it poses to the systemic and cultural change that the academy so desperately needs. #DecolonizeTheAcademy

I canβt wait to get my hand on a copy of this. @conorbrockbank.bsky.social is a thoughtful and passionate thinker β cannot wait to read his piece!
JD Vance is refusing to condemn racist and antisemitic messages from Republican groups and Trump's press secretary is saying the Democratic Party is filled with "Hamas terrorists" and "violent criminals."
In a sane reality, this insane comment wouldβve ended the career of any other press secretary. In this reality, itβs just another Thursday.
But when the Trump fever breaks, and it will break, these people will have to reckon with the digital footprints of their own depravity.

Substack keeps feeding me ghosts of assimilationβvoices longing for lost respectability, mistaking obedience for belonging. I trace their grief, their drift rightward, and reclaim the simple, ungovernable act of reaching for myself.

I meant this deeply: My work now is all dissent work. I write for a future I likely will not see.
New blog: 'On AI and the Academy: Dragging heels βtil they outsource themselves out of a job.'
Colleges investing in AI and assessing students = big wins, greater investments, happier students.
Anti-AI campuses = departmental breakdowns and revenue losses.

The diminishment of prominent Black journalists is the latest indication that a period of progress in America has ended and a period of retrenchment is in full bloom.

luigi mangione murdered a healthcare executive and opposed "wokeism." i don't know why people insist that killers need some coherent ideology. most people don't even have coherent wardrobes, let alone a coherent worldview.
Funny how this keeps happening?
When I wrote this in 2019 some accused me of exaggerating the connection between the intellectual bigotry/racism of the Spectator and Telegraph (as exemplified by Scruton and Murray) and BNP/street-level thuggery. If anything I was too cautious..

@jonathanliew.bsky.social is absolutely right here. Long past time to stand up to the dangerous racism infecting our political discourse.

It also perfectly encapsulates my concept of refusal in my thesis. I had to adopt another research method because I refuse to extract marginalized voices into my work for the purpose of extraction into the colonizer's speak. Inspired by AudrΓ© Lorde and bell hooks (among others).
This piece is singing to me.
I find marking as a TA so painful because it forces students into conformity. I know your piece isn't about that, per se; but it resonates with me so much. Thank you for writing this.
Research papers and position statements debate methods, but students remain unheard. This essay follows echoesβfrom old battlefields to todayβs classroomsβnaming how fidelity cultures erase voice, and why access is the fight.

"[...] Language that cuts through the fidelity culture of curriculum publishers, who would rather train teachers to withhold support than risk deviating from the pacing guide. Fidelityβhow that word stings. It is presented as virtue, but in practice it is often erasure."

Academic journals gatekeep knowledge. The AutSide builds something else: open, rigorous, needs-based writing shaped by lived experience. We donβt need more prestigeβwe need trust, access, and solidarity. We already did the work.

This was such an affirming read. I would, though, go so far as to say that this, indeed, is a good place for research!
Wow! This is fantastic -- reads like a line right out of my (decolonial) methods which critiques acad history: "We write not to be discovered, but because we were never lost."
Snippet from an article in the New Statesman which reads, "So maybe cities are perfect for introverts, and writers. Those of us who like people, at a distance; who like the IDEA of company; who enjoy imagining what others are like. I think of the neighbour I sometimes avoided in the past, but who has moved away, and whose familiar figure I miss. I think of the cafΓ© owner who knows my order but never makes eye contact or conversation."

I wish I could make the trip, Professor @nhannahjones.bsky.social! I need to drop you a DM, but I am wondering if you could impart some advice to a AA political/history PhD cand fighting (raging) against White methods. Whenever I re-read AL's 'Master's Tools' I'm inspired by 1619 Project+its impact.
