Missing person SAR: Green Wall Rapid, Illinois River This is my firsthand account of the private party effort that launched to aid in efforts to search for whitewater rafter Gabriel Vaughn, reported missing on Monday Feb 16, 2026. My narrative is shared with permission from Gabe's family, but it's not his story, its the story of the "search and rescue" trip. The Search Party “There’s a lost person (in the woods?) on an Illinois trip, I have limited info but want to invite you into the loop if appropriate.”It was Monday night around 9:00 p.m. when I

When a kayaker abruptly abandoned his party and disappeared during a trip down the wild and unpredictable Illinois River in Southern Oregon, Nicole Smedegaard helped mobilize the initial Search and Recovery effort. This account of the rescue is textbook planning and comms:

Not just in media, overall. The amount of interest / attention to climate change has plummeted. Maybe people are distracted by more immediate things, but last year was Oregon's third hottest year in records dating back to 1895. Almost every year since 2020 has been in the top 10.

Gear Perspective: Think of Your Fly Rod as a Guitar, Not a Golf Club | MidCurrent Fly fishing often seems to chase the rest of the outdoor industry, hoping that by mimicking its messaging it will magically find a larger market. In reality,

Over at Midcurrent angler and musician Rick Mikesell suggests that golf and golf clubs aren't the right analog for fly fishing and fly rods. The relationship of the rod to the sport is more akin to that of the guitar and the musician. midcurrent.com/v2/gear-pers...

By Myrek Zastavnyi WARWICK / GREENWOOD LAKE — A quiet winter afternoon on Greenwood Lake may have produced a catch for the record books. Warwick resident Viktor Gelman, owner of Warwick's Chocolate Factory, landed what officials say could become the new New Jersey state record on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2026. The fish was officially weighed…

A friend who lives on Greenwood Lake sent me this notice about a potential state record northern pike (it's a musky?) and my first thought was whether it could qualify for both New York and New Jersey state records, since the lake spans the state border: www.wvdispatch.com/2026/02/warw...
