Lloyd Axworthy: Canada once rejected America’s aggressive, unlawful foreign policy. Today Mark Carney embraced it By endorsing preventive strikes on Iran during ongoing diplomacy, and after Washington itself shredded the previous agreement, we are embracing the very doctrine we used to reject, writes Lloyd Axwort...

"We invoke international law and the 'rules based international order' when adversaries engage in unlawful actions, but abandon those same rules entirely when it’s the Americans doing the bombing."

#Opinion from former foreign minister Lloyd Axworthy

One speech that clearly impacted Trump and he backed down from use of force. That is a hell of an impact. I am not defending other actions or lack thereof but just making an observation about Canada impact.

It is a time scale problem. You are focusing on day to day actions… he is focusing on longer trends with long term plans. Regardless of his rhetoric.. Canada is the only country that did not sign a tariff deal with trump… EU did, Japan did, Korea did, etc.

I tend to focus more on government policies and what they are doing than political maneuvers and politicians career aspirations. If he crossed the floor because his constituents told him so, then good for him. We will know that next time election.

Over 20000 students are admitted above the corridor (only tuition). Massive leverage if coordinated. You have to increase revenues even with reducing cost.

12.12.2025 06:45 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

That will only solve the problem if it is transient. It is not. Without increased revenues, no matter the amount of cuts, you will still end up financially unsustainable. Better to simply stop accepting students beyond the corridor. This will create a massive social problem leading to solution

JT championed all sorts of climate policies while building and owning a 34B pipeline. Are we closer to meeting our climate targets. Nope. Now Carney removes the pipeline barriers except $$$$ while getting Alberta to commit $$$$ for carbon sequestration is bad. Not sure. Let us wait and see.

It will all depend on the vote results. Divided and u have a chance at the senate specially if the process is rushed. Faculty associate should threaten a unionization drive.

This will need to approved by senate… correct? U can make a case there specially if the vote is divided.

Carney has been a PM for few weeks now. Regardless of he or trump says, action is what matters. Already it is clear that Canada’s FP is less aligned with US. Let us judge actions not words. 2) every PM has a strong mandate to the country sovereignty. US is our only neighbour. Act accordingly

Every system has its pro and cons. Look at Germany, Italy, and Israel. Small parties pushing the government to extreme policies. I believe that public opinion and free media is far more effective in holding government accountable. For example, Ford and the greenbelt.

Ipsos had a 10 points lead when the mean was 5-6. So they now has a 6 point lead. Not a big deal. Also smaller sample size. In terms of issues, it depends on the province. Ontario and Quebec are hardest hit by tariff and they will decide the election. Will see.

It depends on your time scale. Short term, pipeline lines as part of an plan to be energy superpower but long term green energy will take over regardless of what politicians want. Already solar and wind is cheaper than nuclear which is cheaper than any fossil.

Winning votes in Alberta will not make any difference. The election is decided in the east and everyone knows that. But he must work to have minimum unity in the country so he can take on the US. Already even the possibility of him winning are creating calls for breaking the country.

There are 33m companies in the USA. Only 21k employe 500 or more. And they only make up 23% of workers.

Trump and Elon are ignoring the more than 32m entrepreneurs that can't afford to build a new factory or pay tariffs or absorb cancelled contracts.
