For united, there's like a set of special upgrade points you can use toward upgrades called PlusPoints I have a ton of. For this one, I opted into using those points, but I was still like 10th on the list. I think the flight had a bunch of people missing connections and I just got super lucky.

Europe trip over, and got that last minute first class upgrade home 🎉
