There was some really good points to this recipe. Microwaving to remove the moisture is good food science. You season the eggplant at several points so it’s packed with flavor! I think my issue was just textural. Why go to so much trouble frying the EP just to get them soggy with sauce?

I made the Food Lab’s Eggplant Parm Casserole tonight. It was both some of the best eggplant parm I’ve ever had and something I will probably not be making again anytime soon. Not sure the juice was worth the squeeze. Might try deconstructing it next time if I do it make again.

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

Got a piece of writing advice that is often given but commonly misunderstood? Drop a comment.

And if you think there are folks who might benefit from this type of advice, give it a boost. #Scriptsky and #Screenwriting have been relatively quiet of late.

So maybe a better way to think about write what you know is to write what interests you, be it physical, philosophical, or emotional. Tap into your experiences, feelings, passions, and the people you know. That’s how your bring authenticity to your writing. It’s how you say something.

…What it means to be a citizen when society is falling apart around you. Whether to run, complain, and be the change you want to see. I’ve never worked in a living history museum though. Only been to Tampa twice. But the thing I knew was how I felt and that’s what I tapped into.

And I think that’s the key to write what you know. What is the little slice of humanity that you are uniquely qualified to explore? I wrote a pilot about raccoons enslaving humanity and forcing some to work in a living history museum recreating present-day Tampa, but it was an exploration of…

So for me, while write what you know *can* apply to things you’ve done, it’s much more about tapping into your feelings and thoughts. Charlie Kaufman has, to my knowledge, never had part of his memory erased. But he tapped into the emotions of a breakup in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

A quick #Scriptsky #Screenwriting thread on WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW. This is some of the most ubiquitous writing advice but also widely misunderstood. WWYK doesn’t mean only write about the exact things you’ve done. Then there would be no stories about time travel or aliens or dogs playing football.

I kept telling the Celtics fans in my life that Tatum would probably be back this season. Having been through an Achilles tear myself, I’m rooting for him.

People tend to talk about the loud, dramatic, graphic scenes on The Pitt, but last night’s episode was a masterclass in balancing those with these incredible quiet moments. And all those quiet moments play so much more impactful because they contrast the chaos of the show. Amazing stuff!

Dolly Parton's America : Episodes | WNYC Studios | Podcasts The story of a legend at the crossroads of America’s culture wars.

I was like six years late to the party, but absolutely loved the Dolly Parton’s America podcast! I knew she was charming, and a mensch, and a savvy business woman, but I had no idea what an incredible songwriter she was.

Anna Lytic gets up in the afternoon and pokes holes in everything. She’s useful. But not for a first draft. I try to lock her in the basement of my mind until it’s time for us to work together to fix something.

I grilled them outdoors. Used my Weber propane grill and kept two of the three burners on to get that hot side / cooler side effect. About a minute on each side of the bok choy on the hot side, then 3 minutes on the cooler side. Came out great! It’s entered the dinner rotation.

Spam & Rice Bake - Higashis Kitchen If you love spam musubis, then you need to try this recipe! The perfect ratio and balance of sweet salty spam to rice.

Credit to my amazing wife for this one. She found and made this spam and rice casserole recipe. We didn’t bake it and it ate like a deconstructed musubi. Delicious!

It’s small potatoes, but reason number 6,355 why these evil fucks have got to go is: Bluesky should largely just be idiots like me making dumb wordplay jokes instead of idiots like me narrating the daily horrors stemming from fascism, corruption, and late-stage capitalism.

MUTINY AFTER MIDNIGHT
MUTINY AFTER MIDNIGHT YouTube video by Johnny Blue Skies

It’s a country album.
There’s a disco funk vibe.
Lots of smooth sax solos.
Very political.
It’s sexy and raunchy.

These elements have no business working in concert with one another, but… somehow they do. Sturgill pulled off one of the best protest albums of my lifetime!

Michael Corleone makes a choice to kill and it changes everything, especially him. Alt: Michael Corleone makes a choice to kill and it changes everything, especially him.

A MIDPOINT can make or break your story. The fun & games are over. You need a big turn to hold the audience’s interest and propel your story into the 2nd half.

In the Godfather, Michael kills Sollozzo and McCluskey. It raises the stakes and changes him. Forever.

When I was a writers’ assistant on The Office, Greg Daniels hated the rocking grandma trope. It became a bit and I named our internal email after it. So imagine my delight when I watched the trailer for Company Retreat (from 2 of The Office writers, Lee Eisenberg & Gene Stupnitsky). Rockin’ Grandma!

Fair. But I can’t be sued for damages for a 12 year old spoiler (14 years old if you count the book). That’s a spoiler old enough for Republicans to put to work in a coal mine.

There’s a statute of limitations on spoilers. If it’s been more than 10 years since it came out, no one can be mad about spoilers. That’s not just my belief. This was decided in u/MovieMaven v Reddit Nerds and is now settled law.

a man wearing glasses is getting a massage from a woman on the beach . Alt: The exact moment where everything changes for Brody. It propels us into the second half of Jaws!

One of my favorite midpoint twists is the harbor attack in Jaws. Brody’s son has been threatened and now Brody must face his fear and go to sea.

Do you have a favorite midpoint I missed? Let me know. And remember, if your act 2 is lagging, you probably need a stronger midpoint to bolster it!

Sometimes a midpoint propels the story forward with a crazy ass twist the audience didn’t see coming.

In Gone Girl, Amy is still alive!

a t-rex is standing in front of a car that says ' jurassic park ' on the side Alt: A T-Rez shouts, β€œShit just got real!” in dinosaur.

So a midpoint doesn’t always have to have the exact same impact. The important things are that it raises the stakes and makes the audience ask the question, β€œWhat happens next?!”

In Jurassic Park, the power goes out and the T-Rex breaks out of its holding pen.
