Circa 2005, I had a meeting with Kevin Spacey to discuss adapting a book to which his company owned the rights. He had recently taken over as artistic director of the Old Vic theater and I had been there to see a play in 2003. As you do in meetings like this, it started with some small talk...

In the summer of 1998 I was absolutely convinced that these people could save the planet.

Tell y'all what, sometimes the best teacher for how good movies work is a movie that should be good but somehow isn't.

Honestly might be my favorite kind of review to write because I just figure so much out along the way.

30 years ago I saw this opening night with a film school classmate I barely knew. I absolutely loathed it. As the credits rolled my classmate remarked, “That was really great.” I thought, god what an idiot.

Anyway, @chadfiveash.bsky.social and I have been writing partners ever since.

Most 80's movie tie-in games were terrible, but The Goonies for the Commodore 64 was an absolute masterpiece.

I struggle with this premise because if you love a movie it CAN’T be hot garbage. A movie’s objective is to entertain. If it succeeds, it’s not garbage.

And this is coming from someone who owns TIME CHASERS, ALIEN FROM L.A., MANOS THE HANDS OF FATE and STARCRASH… on bluray!

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 71616:
If you're struggling to stay creative during the dark part of the year, go back to what you love. Re-read, re-watch, rediscover old favourites. Remind yourself why you're doing this. Find your joy.

I've famously told this story on podcasts a number of times, but I met Gil Gerard as a kid at a celebrity tennis tournament and he tried to pick up my mom right in front of me. Was I mad? No. Buck Rogers tried to fuck my mom, which is the most Buck Rogers thing he could do. Lived up to the legend.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit knowing AI can kiss his traded for Al Michaels ass

You know who’s not gonna be on AI?

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

Because he knows the score. He’s known it for 80-fuckin-years. Stay invisible. Make your own rules.

Booze. Cards. Dice. Women. Oswald knows the number.

And he ain’t got time to care about this shit.

THAT’s luck.

Brad Luff Dies: Film Executive & Producer Of ‘Saving Silverman’ & ‘Parker’ Was 60 Brad Luff, former executive at Original Film, Morgan Creek and Sony, passed away Dec. 12 due to complications from cancer and a stroke. He was 60.

Brad Luff gave so many new writers their first big break, myself included. Creative, passionate, and a willingness to take big swings. He will be dearly missed. deadline.com/2025/12/brad...

Liked it as a kid, and honestly was surprised how much more I loved it as an adult. In a decade filled with cinematic wonder, the Stained Glass Knight and the Rame Tep chant remain top tier.

During the table read for my first episode of The Vampire Diaries, one of the lead actors stopped the table read halfway through to lambast me for writing a line of dialog containing a word that they didn't want to say. That word was "vampire."

I find “Testament” more haunting than “The Day After” thanks to how it quietly shows normal life and the family slowly, inexorably disintegrating—especially the consequences for the children and how they understand what’s happening even if they can’t fully articulate it. It’s horrifyingly relatable.

Truly one of the most quietly devastating movies I’ve ever seen. It’s intimate and brutal in its realistic depiction of day to day life following a nuclear war.

No one should get death threats over something they “did” to a comic book character.

I have said before and will say again that it is such a loss that we no longer get covers of this caliber for fantasy books.

This art is by Jean-Léon Huens. These covers are for the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. They lit my imagination on fire as a kid.
