I support this even more after seeing detailed protective bike lane possible options tonight. ๐ฒ
I want safer lanes right to businesses, not to a few blocks away where I then have to navigate the chaos to my actual destination.

Some history about Codornices Village is now online. Its a 1953 MA thesis by Helen Smith Alancraig
It covers a lot of details about the city council and public housing for WW2 workers and later UC students.

A teal flyer with doodles of kids biking and holding signs calling for street safety. Text outlines meeting info: SHOW UP FOR HOPKINS BIKE LANES-- March 12, meet at 4:15pm at King School Park, 1700 Hopkins, Berkeley
Berkleyโs planned Hopkins bike lanes are threatened once again, despite approved plans, funding, and thousands of hours of community & staff time. We're amplifying this peaceful demonstration organized by neighbors. Check it out + learn more about the project www.northberkeleynow.org/hopkins-bike...
Middle school kids returning home on foot, having to wait in the middle of a 35mph road.
Our children deserve better than to be forced to huddle together on a pork chop island in the middle of a slip-lane, which the city refuses to close. Not to mention the exposure to tire, brake and exhaust pollution.
Big news! The City of Sacramento's 2025 housing production numbers are out and *significantly* beat expectations โย up 14.7% over 2024 to 2,737 homes. sacramento.granicus.com/MetaViewer.p...
Proud to see that my representatives in Sacramento, Asm. Wicks (@buffywicks.bsky.social) and Sen. Jesse Arreguin (@jessearreguin.bsky.social) both received better than perfect scores on the @streetsforall.org 2025 Mobility Report Card.
Check out your legislators!

Alfred Twu Thought remains undefeated.
Bluesky post from Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan: 1) E-bikes are a fun and eco-friendly way to get around, but higher-speed riders arenโt always following the rulesโand that can put everyone at risk. Since 2023, there have been nearly twice as many e-bike fatalities as regular bike fatalities, even with fewer overall injuries.
Maddening to see such obfuscation from the author of a bill that will criminalize people biking while doing nothing to address unsafe driving.
The cause of the vast majority of deaths while biking or e-biking is drivers in CARS. If the Assemblymember truly cared about safety, sheโd regulate cars.
Together with the CA DMV & the CDTFA, weโre charging 14 Bay Area individuals for attempting to avoid paying over $1.8 million in CA luxury car purchase taxes.

MORE ๐ HOUSING ๐ NEAR ๐ TRANSIT
BART, the State of California, the City of El Cerrito, and development partner Related California have broken ground on 70 affordable apartments at the El Cerrito Plaza BART Station, marking the start of the first phase of the Transit-Oriented Development
It'd be easy to mock Sausalito for an error like this. But a jurisdiction of 7,000 with a volunteer city council that is responsible for roads, bicycle infratructure, parks, building codes, zoning, police will make mistakes. Especially when it spends most of its time fighting housing laws
Noted BART rider, Muni enthusiast, and Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu will be celebrated next Thursday, March 12th at Oakland City Hall. It's only appropriate to celebrate someone who understands the joy that public transit brings by gathering signatures to save public transit! Come join!
Take a survey to help shape a variety of proposals for how the City of Berkeley would manage on-street parking near transit stations, on its busiest streets, and in business districts.

Hopkins Street is back, but the news isnโt good. A new proposal would pave the street without previously-approved bicycle and transit improvements.
Learn more at our Hopkins Teach-In on Monday, March 9 at 7-8pm (virtual).

Todayโs groundbreaking ceremony for El Cerrito Plaza BART TOD was exciting!
It will be transformative for our small city, with 743 homes, major bike/ped improvements, and hopefully a new library.
Iโve worked on this project for a decade and couldnโt be happier that itโs now under construction.
East Bay for Everyone Opposes Cal Chamber "BACA" CEQA Ballot Measure Streamlining sprawl development is not "Pro-Housing!"
Thanks to the important CEQA reform passed last year, the @calchamber.bsky.social BACA measure does nothing for the infill housing we need.
What it does do is streamline everything from sprawl detached housing to highways to data centers.

a fedex truck parked totally blocking the protected bicycle lane on Milvia at University in Berkeley
Berkeley's delightful Milvia protected bike lane, which for me connected about $100 of shopping errands today along Shattuck, was totally blocked by a FedEx near University today.
Note the adjacent available empty loading zone.

The City of Encinitas, California (north of San Diego) is removing what looks like a really nice protected bike lane to replace it with a painted bike lane.
Cost? More than $3 million.
Berkeley PlanCom meeting tonight on the CZU. We'll be voting on a zoning ordinance.
Excited that last week @wcctc.bsky.social approved $12k for 21 bike racks in El Cerrito Plaza shopping center, as part of a grant program for small projects I asked staff to initiate.
Current racks in the plaza are hidden away in corridors. New racks will be visible and safer in front of stores.
San Jose FD, for the CAL FIRE single-stair report, did a simulation of evacuation from a building, both in a stairway segregated from firefighters going up and then shared. It was an interesting Rohrschach test for the group โ the FDs thought it looked really bad, the others thought it was fine.
NIMBYs will use any available regulations to slow down and block new housing.
As such, it is important for people with sincere commitments to worthy causes like environmentalism and historic preservation to call BS when NIMBYs weaponize their causes in bad faith to prevent neighborhood change.
The report models evacuation times for small floor plate buildings with 1 stair vs 2, finding that evacuating with 2 stairs is faster.
Notably, it does NOT model evacuation times for the much larger floor plate buildings with 2 stairs that are allowed under current law for comparison, which is odd!
