Insofar as we have any reliable marketing data, it seems like US first-time opera-goers *want* it to be expensive, luxurious and slightly forbidding (ergo, a treat). It's only after they've grown to love it that they might want to see it in an underground car park for $25.
Late 19thC and early 20thC there was certainly fairly mass appeal (especially before the explicit bifurcation of opera and musical theatre). In large part helped by people playing the popular bits at home on the piano.
I know some people have had a sense of humour bypass on this, but I think he may have done more for us than the last five years of marketing.

I saw ‘Frozen’ with my kids when they were the age of the sisters at the start of the film & found it really affecting. They adored - the whole orphan thing and feeling responsible for the near-death of your sibling lost - Bit they recently re-watched it & came out and said “My GOD it’s dark!”
