In True Narratives: Framing the Pain, Punishment & Lethality of Termination of Parental Rights, through the practice of abolitionism, Corey Best and I seek to make the chains visible, beginning to excavate the true costs of family policing’s relentless reliance on the civil death penalty.
What will it take to make our chains visible and practice a collective reckoning- that holds a sacred reminder that freedom has and must always remain the vision.
What if the truth is hiding in plain sight, cloaked in the shame and silencing of the wounds of grieving parents and stolen children — normalized by a society that sees their pain as deserved?
What if appeals to morality hold little sway, because a twisted notion of morality —which once sanctified the auction block, but now justifies the pain and punishment of termination of parental rights - was forged into the chains of injustice?
What myths, forged in the furnace of anti-Blackness, uphold this peculiar system’s reliance on the civil death penalty—the permanent severing of Black families - a legacy of forced family separation which reverberates for generations?
What if we practiced living in truth, where we understand family policing as nothing but a modern day plantation—reborn in bureaucracy—where the chains are legal, the overseers wear badges, and the lash is replaced with court orders?
