Michael Caine Countdown Back in 2024 I completed the lengthy task of watching every single film Michael Caine had ever made. To celebrate I then of course ranked them from 124-1 (I chose to only include credited roles in the...

Today is of course Michael Caine’s 93rd birthday. If you’d like to celebrate by seeing the big countdown of my favourite and least favourites of his many films that I did some time ago when I’d watched them all then here it is. Crucially it’s my favourites not objectively the best.

Inside the manual, we have the characters. Let's give a shout out to Joan Valencia. He looks like a menace, wearing what's looks to be a bloody hockey jersey. Also Bettina? How YOU doin?

Bonus pic of (part of) the wall at Book Off that tried to kidnap me. There is just so much to go through, especially when you aren't familiar with any of it.
Also there was a Nanashi No Game in the display case. The SquareEnix haunted game for the DS. I wanted it, but I'd much rather just play the English ROM, so I left it for someone who will hopefully play that copy instead of just putting it on the shelf forever.

I'm back from Japan and let me tell you, I had to brave walls of illegible titles at Book Off to provide a genuinely random title for #RandomGameSaturday.

Zeus: Carnage Heart Second is the first sequel in a line of strategy RPG mech games, made by our friends at Artdink. All but EXA are Japan only.

I remember learning about the Hays Code in film school and how it made it so that any amoral protagonist had to meet karmic justice by the end of the film and going “wow, that’s really silly” and then once a week I log online and see people argue that we need stuff like that now or it’s problematic

Demand more whimsy. The Northern Bank portrait format space shuttle remains one of my favorites, bank durability notwithstanding

If your SO is a good photographer they're probably going to be a massive nerd about it. If you can't handle me at my "Did you know that the 8-element 50/1.4 Super Takumar is radioactive?" then you don't deserve me at my "Hey, let's take some photos the light is perfect."

Really you have to apply depreciation to the _model_, because it costs a colossal amount of energy and lasts about three months until superceded

The GPU depreciation limit is definitely under 5 years. The energy question matters as well - at some point the new parts use significantly less power per unit of work.

As Stafford Beer said during the introduction of decimal currency, "why do we have to be such bloody clots? And why do the news media encourage us in our clottishness?"

Dark money group offers influencers $1,500 for posts attacking Chicago Democratic primary candidate Progressive House candidate Kat Abughazaleh told MS NOW the secretive campaign is “filled with false and defamatory claims.”

HOLY SHIT.

A dark money group, hidden behind a bunch of shell companies, is paying influencers thousands of dollars PER POST to attack @katmabu.bsky.social on social media a month before her election.

Thank you to the people who declined the money and went forward with this. So who's behind this?

What happened is I mentioned this absurd idea to a BBC producer and now I am writing an afternoon play for Radio 4 called THE CALL OF CTHUDO, to be recorded sometime in June with (ideally) various Green Wing alumni doing their best 1930's detective voices.

a heuristic that rarely steers me wrong is that any time you find a world that valorizes 1) youth, 2) forswearing sleep, family, friendship 3) total commitment in the face of long odds, there is somebody to whom none of those conditions apply exploiting the hell out of that situation

I'm not a 'one chart to explain everything about British politics' guy, but if I were this would be the chart. You will notice the Chancellor's pre-election strategy, 'I would simply Do A Growth', has not had an effect.

Once again reminding all the usual suspects that you don't understand how big the boats going through that strait are. You think you have an idea in your head of what size the boats are, but you're wrong. You're probably a whole order of magnitude out, even. They're so big, dude.

'AI Is African Intelligence': The Workers Who Train AI Are Fighting Back Kenyan workers are still the underpaid labor behind AI training, moderation, and sex chatbots. The Data Labelers Association is fighting back.

I met with AI data labelers in Kenya who are organizing their colleagues to fight the brutal working conditions and horrible pay given to the workers at the "bottom of the AI supply chain." They believe the NDAs they've signed are unenforceable so are speaking out:

Now wondering if anyone has suggested the reverse: offer to sell the US such a tanker at inflated list price, on condition they supply a USN crew. Great opportunity to offload a liability onto desperate buyers

The funniest thing about the MFS story so far is the credit fund that kept out of their trade because it didn't meet the CIO's criterion of the "watch/house ratio" (don't invest with a counterparty whose watch costs more than your house)

A non crank Conservative party wouldn't have done most of the last ten years.

I think they might be past the "trust thermocline", especially if they start losing by elections to Reform.
