It’s not one or the other when we consider facilitating online vs in-person connections, they can positively reinforce each other. Online communities and in-person connections should be complementary!
✨Connection is key, so we should work to facilitate both online and in-person connections for youth that may have difficulty in finding places where they feel they belong…
✨The research shows that spaces that are both affirming of Black LGBTQ+ youth’s culture and their sexual orientation, function as protective factors within broader online environments that can also expose youth to harm.
✨Comfort is highest in spaces where both racial/ethnic identity and LGBTQ+ identity are represented, underscoring the importance of intersectional affirmation. How can you make sure that culture is represented and appreciated?
✨For the research collaboration, my team and I focused specifically on how Black LGBTQ+ youth interact online. How they provide support. How they receive support. The positive benefits, as well as what support is missing from online communities. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
