The Navy is increasingly concerned that the Islamic State or other terrorist groups could acquire and deploy cheap naval mines, which analysts say are available on the international black market to any group able and willing to pay. One potential nightmare scenario: A few mines in the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East could shut down the key shipping channel for days or weeks. A fifth of the world’s oil supply moves through the narrow passage, the only route connecting the oil-rich Persian Gulf region to the open sea. Blocking it for even a few days could have a significant impact on global markets. To emphasize the concern, the mine-clearing exercise led by the U.S. this spring tested how the international community would respond if a terrorist group placed mines in Hormuz or in other strategic choke points in the region. Reporters for The Virginian-Pilot and the Investigative Reporting Program traveled to Bahrain in April to observe the exercise.

I wrote this a decade ago after traveling to Bahrain while investigating the U.S. Navy's aging minesweeping systems, which had fallen into disrepair:

In fact, as recently as Monday morning, as he prepared to make his career announcement, he posted a video on YouTube calling out MAGA forces trying to “rewrite the history” of that day by disseminating “lies.” So when MacFarlane saw anchor Tony Dokoupil mark the anniversary with only a 16-second report that embraced a both sides approach to the act of violence carried out by Trump supporters on that day, he was aghast. It’s not clear whether MacFarlane made his disapproval known to Dokoupil or network leadership, but he did communicate it to some colleagues, and it became known inside the network.

You can devastate a news organization The Jeff Bezos Way, by slashing the budget in half and forcing massive layoffs.

Or you can do it The Bari Weiss Way, by steadily eroding your journalism standards, week after week, so the talented people who can leave, do leave.

But I think about 5 years from now, with the investment promised and PSR navigated, the new training ground, a new stadium set to open around then, when we look back and see how this game exemplifies how close we are.

It was decided when we absorbed pressure to save some energy and their quality and depth got the best of us.

But this was an entertaining game. We ran at them and both teams went toe-to-toe for probably 65 minutes tonight.

Hey so I’m a little bummed that City can throw out the B+ team and beat us in our park, that we had to resort to counter tactics to compete tonight, with the injuries and that fatigue and basically hoping some good bounces and fan passion would get us over the line.
