There is an impulse in moments like this to appeal to self-interest. To say: These horrors you are allowing to happen, they will come to your doorstep one day; to repeat the famous phrase about who they came for first and who they'll come for next. But this appeal cannot, in matter of fact, work. If the people well served by a system that condones such butchery ever truly believed the same butchery could one day be inflicted on them, they'd tear the system down tomorrow. And anyway, by the time such a thing happens, the rest of us will already be dead.
No, there is no terrible thing coming for you in some distant future, but know that a terrible thing is happening to you now. You are being asked to kill off a part of you that would otherwise scream in opposition to injustice. You are being asked to dismantle the machinery of a functioning conscience.
Who cares if diplomatic expediency prefers you shrug away the sight of dismembered children? Who cares if great distance from the bloodstained middle allows obliviousness. Forget pity, forget even the dead if you must, but at least fight against the theft of your soul.
One of many moments in Omar El Akkadβs new book, βOne Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This,β that will stop you in your tracks.

Fragile, Flooded South Sudan Asks: What About Those With Disabilities?
The idea that the world is becoming a better place, and there are less and less needs in terms of humanitarian aid, is over.β
"Globally, 84% of people with disabilities lack a personal preparedness plan for disasters, according to the United Nations, which makes them a very vulnerable group, especially in a contentious region like South Sudan." Uprooter Kang-Chun Cheng for @thexylom.com

Multilateral banks are key to financing the fight against global warming. Here is how they work
International mega banks, funded by taxpayer dollars, are the biggest, fastest-growing source of climate finance for the developing world.
Eye-opening read on how multilateral banks have huge power to provide climate finance for clean solutions to developing countries, yet still keep many hooked on fossil fuels.
In 2018, an arm of the world bank loaned $105m towards rehabilitating coal plants in India.

Trumpβs Energy Shakeup Will Spare Carbon Capture
The US president-electβs pick to lead the Environmental Protection Agency has embraced CCS technology.
How do we know carbon capture is a climate problem masquerading as a solution that serves to further enrich the oil industry?
One way is look at the data. Another way is to note that itβs the only part of Bidenβs Infrastructure Act likely to survive in 2025.
