people just need to accept that no amount of clock changing will save them from the reality that they live in a northern latitude, and winter is gonna be cold and dark.

Jews are targeted in shuls & online.

Brown & Black people are abducted and sent to concentration camps.

Muslims are openly targeted by politicians.

Activists & journalists are targeted by the FBI.

Trans & queer people are being outlawed.

We are in this together. This is why solidarity matters.

notably, also the same strategic mistake they made with the ICE assaults on blue america (and, one could argue, 1/6). history never ends, there is always an unpredictable "and then" following any initial action.

Really good read.

Also nails the disconnect between how tech and artists see LLMs: “in the creative disciplines, LLMs take away the most soulful human parts of the work and leave the drudgery to you. And in coding, LLMs take away the drudgery and leave the human, soulful parts to you.”

my wife grew up near the border, and pre-9/11, the mall, walmart, and gas stations used to get a substantial % of their business from canadians driving south for lower prices.

what's weird is, i haven't really seen much of this in SC. the dumb things people do now is pretty much the same dumb things they did before covid. if anything, we're closer to our neighbors now, which really got started after spending 2020 intensively hanging out on porches and chatting.

US Jewish leaders express alarm over new political conditions for synagogue security grants Houses of worship that don't cooperate with ICE or that offer DEI programming are worried new terms will make them ineligible for funding that helps cover essential safety measures

As we face the aftermath of another synagogue attack, reminder: The federal government is now requiring synagogues to cooperate with ICE and have no DEI programs to be eligible for federal security funding, which were not requirements pre-Trump administration. www.timesofisrael.com/us-jewish-le...

Palantir CEO Makes Shocking Confession on Disrupting Democratic Power They’re saying the quiet part out loud now.

"Palantir CEO Alex Karp says his AI technology will lessen the power of “highly educated, often female voters, who vote mostly Democrat” while increasing the power of working-class men."

Just saying it right out loud now.

I had thought this was OBVIOUSLY satirical but since I just got an interview request from a major news network, apparently not.

The first, foremost, & hardest duty of any real China Hand is & has always been convincing their brethren 'back home' that China is an actual, physical place filled with fully-realized, self-actualizing people, trends, forces, & problems... & is not, in fact, just a funhouse mirror of their own.

absolutely, but once that empire existed, and could draw upon the organizational and military resources of central asia, north china, and the middle east, trying to hold back that tide with just a river for defense was probably impossible. it's amazing xiangyang held out as long as it did, TBH.

pre-civil rights era, it doesn't map neatly onto partisan labels like it does now. both republican and democratic christians counted despicable bigots and civil rights champions in their ranks.

the size of the non-MAGA GOP split is pretty salient, esp. in some districts. the GOP can't win in most places without keeping a substantial % of non-MAGA and a chunk of independent voters onside and turning out. if enough of them hit their breaking point while dems turn out, things get interesting.

the song fought valiantly, and gets a bad rap in chinese nationalist historiography IMO. but the sheer force that the mongols brought to bear was near-impossible to withstand head-on, and the economic prize of south china was too valuable for any post-khubilai mongol state to give up on.

for the kamikaze, yes, and the mongol generals would not listen to the korean sailors who knew. but in hungary and syria, the weather events that thwarted their initial invasions were pretty unusual. nicola di cosmo wrote a great article about it, "climate variability and medieval nomadic empires."

that's a big part of why the song developed in the way that it did—it struggled against powerful peer states from the get-go (liao, jin, and eventually the mongols), who quickly adopting song tech as it leaked north.

but noone really held off the mongols without physical barriers and lucky weather.

Increasingly of the opinion that the correct answer to the Trolley Problem is "fuck you, why are you so fixated on finding reasons to justify killing people?"
