Whoa: young scholar searching Florence libraries for how the ancient Ptolemy informed Galileo found a copy of Ptolemy's Almagest with marginalia in what looks a lot like Galileo's own hand. Like a frozen moment of torch passing, when a carefully tended fire from antiquity ignited something new.

They said it's too expensive to bring back. We just have to leave it there. Seems like a shame.

I got to go on a 2 day transverse range field trip led by Bob Sharp back in the MER timeframe. It was amazing. He was a kid living in Oxnard the night the San Francisquito dam failed. Told us about "loudspeaker trucks" driving through town warning people to move to higher ground.

What an honour to speak at an event for the Earth Rover Program last week alongside some incredible people, almost none of whom seem to be on BlueSky except for @georgemonbiot.bsky.social

I spoke on soil health in ancient Mesopotamia, and here are some snippets of what I learned along the way

These are perfect for making tank parachutes and other "soft goods" if you are into that sort of thing.

One strategy is to find yourself a good repair shop first. If possible someone that deals with pro gear. They often have fixed up gear for sale.

My wife is a pro costumer. Her workhorse is a Bernina 1008. She has a Singer Heavy Duty 4423 that she uses as an "on set" machine. Another option might be a "barn find" grade all-metal machine from the 50's/60's.

The galaxy designated MoM-z14 is currently the farthest galaxy ever detected, spotted by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) and confirmed spectroscopically with its NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph) instrument.

Through Webb, we are seeing this galaxy as it appeared in the distant past, only 280 million years after the universe began in the big bang. Its light has traveled through space for more than 13 billion years to reach us.

Like some other galaxies Webb has discovered in the early universe, MoM-z14 is brighter, more compact, and more chemically enriched than astronomers expected to find in this early era. While it may pass out of record books quickly as the farthest galaxy, MoM-z14 will still play a role in helping astronomers and theorists reach new understanding of the earliest chapters in the universe’s story.

News from the edge of the visible universe:

JWST has confirmed this galaxy, MoM-z14, as the most distant one yet studied. We're seeing it as it was 13.5 billion years ago, 98% of the way back to the beginning of time.

(MoM stands for "miracle or mirage.") πŸ§ͺπŸ”

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

I have experienced this myself on many occasions. Very curious about the mechanism. Often low latency between "end of stress" and "getting sick", so "Weakened and got sick during crunch time" does not seem like a good model. "Immune response deferred till end of stress" seems to fit my data better.

Anglo-Saxon gold filigree finger-ring - with gold wires representing branches or vines, and a myriad of tiny granular gold balls representing flowers or fruit - set with an engraved oval Roman intaglio gem made of nicolo, depicting figure of the god Bonus Eventus. Bonus Eventus was the Roman god of "good outcome," personifying the successful results of labor, particularly agriculture, but also other human activities. He was depicted as a male figure holding a cup and a spray of wheat or grain and was associated with general success and good omens, appearing on coins from emperors like Vespasian and Septimius Severus. The naked god holds a sheaf of wheat in his right hand, down by his leg, and holds out a cup in his left hand.

Nicolo is an intaglio carved in banded onyx (such as this one), agate or glass in such a way that the depiction, engraved on the pale top layer, reveals the dark color underneath.

Anglo-Saxon gold ring, 6th century CE; Roman nicolo intaglio, ca. 1st-5th century CE. Found at Snape, Suffolk, England.

British Museum, London (1950,1206.1)

The ring below is a historical mashup. It's a chunky Anglo-Saxon gold filigree finger ring set with an ancient Roman intaglio featuring the god Bonus Eventus, aka "good outcome." He personifies the successful results of labor, particularly agriculture. 🏺 1/

My dad was a cinematographer. He once had put big arc lights on a distant to hill to light something in the background. Ready to shoot, he sent word via radio to "strike the arcs" but after 20 min they still had not turned on. When they checked, the sparkies already had them half way packed up.

Ha Ha! My father (Bob Collins) is credited as an editor on this ( and probably did camera work as well). I have memories from childhood of a shooting day at the beach and rubber fish with bite marks in them. Thank you. I will keep this tab open forever.

This is hands down my favourite #SolarFlare in recent years, an event from September 2024. The flare persisted for several hours, giving us a jaw-dropping view of β€˜coronal rain’ (seen in the yellow structure) and β€˜supra-arcade downflows’ (seen in the cyan structure). A beauty!

Here's a giant isopod from a Okeanos dive in 2019 swimming away with a meal since someone on my isopod post yesterday complained that it was boring and not doing anything. Is this up to your standards?
