Activism and the Electoral Participation of Women
Mona Morgan-Collins
and
Valeria Rueda
Abstract
Can political activism foster electoral participation? We investigate this question by examining the role of the British suffragists in fostering women’s electoral participation. While scholars have shown that women politicians increase women’s participation in politics, less attention has been paid to the role of activists. We fill this gap by studying the 1913 Pilgrimage, a large-scale nationwide march in support of women’s parliamentary suffrage. Using a novel database of geocoded electoral registers, we employ a differences-in-differences strategy to show that proximity to the Pilgrimage increased women’s registration in local elections. To explain this effect, we show that exposure to women activists spurred other women’s political mobilization, and that our results are not driven by an endogenous selection of the march path and cannot be attributed to mobilization by other movements or politicians. Our findings highlight that women’s activism can drive political participation even in the virtual absence of women politicians.
Figure 2. Map of the march and data availability at the division level.
Note: March path in sampled counties is along main roads connecting stopping points and along straight lines outside the sample (see Appendix Figure C.1 for stopping points).
Figure 3. The effects of the march using different treatment definitions.
Note: Plots the coefficient of interest β, defined using different distance buffers; ninety per cent and ninety-five per cent CIs; standard errors clustered at the parliamentary division level, using Model 2 in Table 3
“Can political activism foster electoral participation?” Study examines “1913 Pilgrimage, a large-scale nationwide march in support of women’s suffrage.” Finds “women’s activism can drive political participation even in the virtual absence of women politicians.” www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Kemi Badenoch vows to repeal Climate Change Act
Tory leader says she would replace it with ‘cheap energy’ strategy, ending decades-long consensus on climate
Some thoughts on the strategic logic behind Kemi Badenoch’s announcement that she’d scrap the Climate Change Act (CCA).
It serves two functions:
1️⃣ It appeals to lukewarm pivotal voters in marginal seats sceptical of costly green measures.
2️⃣ It is designed to

Update of perhaps my favorite global climate policy indicator: The production gap report.
In fact, the gap between countries' planned fossil fuel extraction and global climate targets has widened.
Turning the tide on these indicators is essential for climate policy success.

I hope the initiative will be underpinned by some cold-blooded political economy analysis to make it effective...
It's just a tough problem - doesn't mean it can/should not be tackled.
Quite the opposite, imho.

For the first time the AfD has nudged ahead of the Union in this national polling aggregator, perhaps Germany's most reliable. Beware cope about the AfD losing this or that mayoral election, including in NRW this coming weekend. Something important is shifting.

Text:
Anti-Klima-Tracker

As of August, do we know what fossil CO2 emissions will do in 2025?
I made an estimate in July, using IEA projections of fossil fuel use, to estimate 0.8% growth in 2025.
Carbon Monitor has an estimate based on Jan-Jun data, 0.7%.
But what about countries?

The paper might sound nerdy, but it makes a broader point that I hope (political) economists take more seriously: institutions are not always constraints (though macro-level ones often are), sometimes they are choice variables for policymakers whose main purpose is not to directly influence

As next to nobody understands elasticity of demand, I propose calling increased car use from building an extra lane 'the Jevons effect', and increased biking from building bike infrastructure 'the Hidalgo effect'.
They differ only in whether we like the outcome, but hey, that's how all this works.
