Kamala Harris was a terrible candidate for prez (so was Biden). But if after she became Dem nominee you spent more energy criticizing her than you did supporting her campaign against the many orders of magnitude worse Donald Trump, I'm sorry but I can't take your political advice very seriously now.

If only there was a historical example of a right wing, ultra-nationalist movement supported by about 30% of a country that scapegoated a religious minority by blaming them for having authoritarian designs on the country.

What’s happening here is that the 30% of the country that wants, like Mike Johnson, to impose its right wing religious values on the country using state power is falsely accusing the 1.3% of the US population that is Muslim of wanting to impose their religion on the country using state power.

If you’re roughly my age, it’s wild to reflect on the optimism for the future Americans felt when Obama was elected — young Americans spontaneously took to the streets to celebrate! — and contrast with what we face today. The falloff over the past 18 years is hard to process.

The DOJ released evidence, which the FBI deemed credible, that the President of the United States sexually and physically assaulted a 13 year old girl AND she was afraid to talk about it because Trump would kill her—and it’s somehow not the biggest scandal in American history?

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

Iran’s people were facing a horrible shortage of water before the war began. If we are destroying desalination plants and setting fire to Teheran we are committing unfathomable crimes.

Victims in our countries seldom get profiled and humanised in Western media. This is a portrait of a life cut short. What a tragedy.

"Saleh Ahmed (55) lived in the UAE as an expat for 25 years, sending under £500 per month in earnings to Bangladesh for his wife and four children."

One aspect (among many) of this war that concerns me is the Islamophobic racism of the war’s supporters in congress and the media is somehow more callous and virulent despite low public support for the war.

Governor Newsom's recent comments about Israel were confusing and problematic at a critical moment, as the United States, Israel, and their regional partners confront significant threats from the Iranian regime.
If the Governor intended to express concern about proposals to annex parts of the West Bank, that debate requires precision. Invoking the term "apartheid" is wrong and inflammatory, does not reflect the complex realities on the ground, and only risks inflaming tensions.

The future of the Democratic Party will be centrist Democrats saying factually true things (and in fact understating them) and the collective pro Israel lobby freaking the fuck out

Trump/GOP/MAGA, Bibi/Likud/settlers, IRI/ISIS/Hamas, Putin, Xi are bad. Moderates who allow those to function are not good. Sometimes you have to compromise with bad actors. Innocent civilians are innocent everywhere, especially children. Not sure how any of this translates into policy.
