Quick question for academics at U.K. universities. What provision does your institution have to allow lecturers at Grade 7 to take part in doctoral supervision?
Can they be lead supervisors? Are they always supported by senior colleagues, for example?

Oxford and my adopted second home of Cambridge (South London forever) looked gorgeous in some much appreciated blue sky in these past few days.

Have you read Richard Frethorneβs letter from Virginia? Really tragic picture of a young man in an awful indenture (though he had the network back home/standing to beg food and supplies)

I knew about the reports of riots in London of children scared of being sent to Virginia but have never seen the source material (this is cool, and sucks all at once)

Rewatching Hook in my mid-thirties and realising that I am Hook. Dramatic, slightly flamboyant existential crises often in a Baroque environment.

Do you ever listen to the Elis James and John Robins show on the BBC/podcasting platforms? Chiles pops up regularly, often with a sneak peek of these columns.

With this and the comments about student loans, Labour really seems to want to lose its base among the millennials and below. If the idea is to court working-class pub-goers, they're too far down the GBNews pipeline to vote Reform-lite (anecdotal evidence of one side of my fam). I want to scream.

It sounds awful. Why the need to put words in mouths when oral histories/testimonies exist? We seem to be in the era of the erosion of consent in *everything*.

Thereβs a company (Lewis Goodall did an interview with them on a story on the rise of AI in Vegas) that will take pictures/texts/videos of deceased people and create a reanimated chatbot you can talk to/ask advice. Heinous.

I feel this (my undergraduate work firmly coalesced around the women who contributed to the patriarchy via moral policing in early America and 17th-century England).

A Jamaican food van arrived at my village/estate in Cambridge today. It turned out that almost everyone in line, including my partner and me, was an excited former South Londoner. My partner and I exclaimed, 'SMELLS LIKE HOME!' and hugged each other like losers as soon as we caught the smoke. Guy ..
