This is such a great thread which I am only discovering now. I’m finishing my own #QuantumMechanics 2 course tomorrow with the Born approximation for scattering and a sweet treat for the students which has become somewhat of a tradition. My favourite class to teach!

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.

β€žWhat’s the origin of the complex exciton emission/absorption profile of 2D halide perovskites?β€œ I hear you asking. Join my early-bird (8:15 am πŸ₯±) presentation tomorrow at #S25MRS to find out. Also stay for great talks by @aimsduke.bsky.social, Claudio Quarti and others.

The opposition is waking up!

The Dutch famously don’t have a protest culture. What made me happy yesterday was to see many of our students join the protests. Several told me it was the first demonstration they had ever seen in Enschede. Hope this inspired many that democracy is more than voting.

I would have never thought that something like this would happen. The one thing that gives me optimism right now are the many great colleagues who are speaking out and the students who are calling out bs when they see it. /3

The fallout of this decision is immense. I don’t want to spell it out here since I hope it is obvious what this means for the people who were laid off, their students and team members, and those that are now asked to clean up the mess that our management is responsible for. /2

Yes, this happened. Chemistry is affected most badly, but also other departments. Most of the PIs that were laid off had active groups, were publishing, receiving grants, teaching, and doing everything else we are told to do to be seen as valuable members of the academic community /1

Some of the #compchemsky DFT calculations in this paper were performed by Sebastian Reyes-Lillo, the master of strain, from Universidad Andres Bello in Chile, who’s not on Bluesky though.

It was amazing to be involved in this collab. I’ve been dreaming about epitaxial halide perovskites since 2016, and now @mmoralesmasis.bsky.social can make them. Think of all the fun things that can be done with this πŸ₯³

I can’t even begin to describe what David Lynch’s movies and, yes, Twin Peaks, mean to me. Opened a whole new world when I was in my early twenties. Beloved strangeness.

Academic publishers: it is an absolute no-go to send a review request on 20 December with a deadline of 25 December, followed by an out-of-office message as a response to my email requesting time until 6 January.

Impressions from our festive end-of-the-year group meeting. Yes, bandstructures are excellent for holding Xmas decorations. You just need the right dispersion.

It was very productive because everyone has something in the pipeline at the moment and was very motivated to get feedback on it and revise. The plan is to do this ~3 - 4 times a year, but my main message is to write a little bit (almost) every day.

This time around, everyone had to come with 1-2 pages of writing and we focused on how to identify and formulate the main argument, claim for significance, giving each other feedback and abstract writing.

This was our second. In the first, I gave two general introductions into how to make figures and why writing articles matters, how to overcome writing roadblocks, etc. The rest of the time was dedicated to working on a figure, a writing exercise and feedback.

I finally got around to pulling some photos I took in the last year from my camera to my computer. Might upload some of them here. This is one of my favourites. From the northern Californian coast.
