Ancient legends, Mystic Charms & Superstitions of Ireland
With sketches of the Irish past

Speranza, Lady Jane Wilde (1821-1896), was not only Oscar his mum but an accomplished poet and folklorist in her own right - her "Ancient Legends, Mystic Charms & Superstitions of Ireland" is a very readable font of c19 views and lore on the subject.

I think, every so often, about how the student protesters in South Korea figured out there was a finite supply of tear gas, and then staged retreating marches that caused police to burn off most of it, before the big "bring your auntie and kids" marches that ultimately toppled the dictatorship.

Getting this in the mail, reading it intermittentlyβ€”with my feet up, on the floor like a kid, at the breakfast table with coffeeβ€”brings me so much joy. @explodingarrow.bsky.social please keep β€˜em coming!

Welcoming in 2026! Creating comics kept me sane in 2025. It was a blast and a year of huge creative growth, community, and friendships. I’m thankful for it, and for all those supporting, encouraging, mentoring, and joining me on this journey. 2026 is shaping up to be my most ambitious year yet!

I’m more interested in nailing down a definitive phrase or word for the many ways that Canadian things are melted into that pot of American stew. Anything filmed in Vancouver, obviously, but it’s so much more.

The cover of They Are Still Here (Mae Nhw Yma O Hyd).

The image is of the sorceror, Gwydion, surrounded by wild animals (wolf, boar, deer) in a Celtic knotwork frame. Gwydion's hat is crowned with antlers. He carries an axe in his right hand and an oak twig in his left.

Art by Josh Arklin.

Remember when we used to trust pizza delivery people to just not put their fingers into our food or whatever it is we think they are doing now?

When I was at Uni I knew so many talented people, and artists of different mediums and modalities. I miss that. Being able to ask someone who has gorgeous handwriting to help me with a beautiful quote I'd like to see above my desk.

"Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone." -- Shirley Jackson, perfecting the semicolon, and the opening paragraph.

"No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more."

Why is it that talking to family on the phone for more than 20 minutes inevitably leads to β€œoh yeah, I need to tell you the most fucked up thing that happened to your aunts best friends daughter, okay?” And now I won’t be able to sleep tonight. I think @mariabamford.bsky.social has a song about it…

NYTimes crosswords throwing in digits now!? THATS WHAT WE’RE DOING THESE DAYS? Fine. Puzzles are puzzling. But to do that and also expect me to know the name of a Bruno Mars album is just annoying.

Our medieval curator Alison Ray introduces Rawlinson Bodleian Library MS. Rawl. D. 252...a 15th Century necromancer's journal.

This manuscript contains spells written in Latin and Middle English, and would have served as a reference for a professional sorcerer.
