Empathy and compassion are not profitable. It's not that it's impossible to make money with empathy and compassion, but one can make much more without them. That is why they are not nurtured in our society. We in fact encouraged to let those muscles atrophy.
When Thich Nhat Hanh came to the US to call for an end to the war in Vietnam, he didn't take a side between the warring parties. He simply asked the US to stop funding the war. We can say the same today. The US needs to stop funding the war.
I grew up in SF, moved to L.A., NY, & DC, before moving back to SF. The SF habit of not making eye-contact/saying hello to people we pass by is not new. When I moved to DC people took offense by my not greeting them, so I learned to do so. Now back in SF people look at me weird. Maybe it's worse now
