Portsmouth plays a large part in the story of the Mary Rose - she was built here, she sank defending Portsmouth from invasion in 1545 and, upon her return to the surface in 1982, this was where she made her new home.

That's why we're backing Portsmouth’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2029!

In 2025 our conservation team removed 1.4kg of dust from the Mary Rose.

This is the equivalent of;

• half a house brick
• 30 golf balls
• 200 human eyes
• 1500 jelly beans

#OnThisDay. 19th July 1545, The Mary Rose sank during the Battle of the Solent, just a few miles from the coast of Portsmouth.

Of her 500 crew, only around 30-40 were saved. The Mary Rose Museum is dedicated to those who lost their lives that day.
