Now the dust is settling after the excitement of #CopimConference last week, I've finally got some time to explore the hashtag & discover some of the conversations & summaries that were happening alongside the panels - fascinating to see what struck people & how much online discussion there was!
Hearing so much about how valuable it is to bring open access, small, scholar led publishers and presses into the same rooms as librarians to challenge the perception that "all publishers are the same" &that they all only care about the marketplace #CopimConference
Niki: For scholar led presses to emerge it is necessary for scholars to have secure positions and therefore the stability to set them up - increasing precarity in HE is an inhibitor to innovation #CopimConference
It seems easier for academic institutions to hand over billions to commercial publishers than for them to give small amounts to scholar led presses #CopimConference
Julian: we would see an explosion of interesting work if there was a pot of money available to scholars to do experimental publishing that didn't come with conditions #CopimConference
Zoe: publishing is the act of making public - it is not the multi-billion dollar industry of extracting financial value out of academic labour. Scholar-led presses are a site of resistance against the marketization of research publishing #CopimConference

Lot of people underestimate how much of the humanities is involved in producing real software. Software development is not a branch of pure maths. We write code to communicate to humans primarily. We write it to fulfil often amorphous human purposes.
