An area of functioning and quality of life is also subjective well-being, and that is an area where some (far from all, as with various groups of people) profoundly disabled people excel.

Hence "often" in the sense of autistic people overall, but it is consistent for some people. Some autistic people also struggle greatly to get out of bed with or without support, for reasons beyond autism.
My argument has never been to deny heterogeneity but autism's so complex that independent research teams have arguably not replicated valid subtypes, that functioning often varies widely within days & over lifespan & is hard to predict, & support should be personalized. www.mdpi.com/2227-7102/13...
Alison Singer herself is affiliated with NCSA too.

The Autism Science Foundation is leading the new I-ACC and has included autistic ppl across genders in its Healthy Engagement in Autism Research Dialogue. Its leadership has published calling for collaboration w/ autistic ppl. Yet no autistic women on I-ACC. 3/ www.broadinstitute.org/neurodevelop...
Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee in 2024 had 8 autistic members (7 public, and 5-6 women). It's required by law to have at least 3 autistic members, and still has 3 (1 woman). Yet its new pro-science rival Independent Autistic Coordinating Committee only has 1 autistic person (a white man).
The Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee's anti-science agenda presents opportunity for bridge-building for long-divided autism community. In honor of International Women's Day I'm calling for new Independent Autism Coordinating Committee to add autistic women 1/ www.reuters.com/business/hea...
Autism is a clinical disability and the neurodiversity movement argues it is *both* a difference *and* a disability. This is part of my lifeβs work to document & explain, but many mischaracterize our studies (including βDeficit, difference, or both?β) and positions.

I dropped out of high school, gained a huge amount of often difficult life experience, then went to community college, and now I'm a professor in a prestigious university. There HAS TO BE A PLACE for non-traditional students. www.theguardian.com/education/20...
There were notions of schizoid personality and autism from Blueler as part of schizophrenia, preceding Sukhareva and her schizoid term clearly was influenced, but she also made her own observations.
Grunya Sukhareva pioneered autism as its own category, and one that in the 1920s is remarkably similar to the present one, including a subtler presentation in girls than boys. Hans Asperger described children with various intellectual abilities & described a spectrum, but in ableist, downplayed way.
Lorna Wing pioneered spectrum concept and also presented camouflaging hypothesis for girls (1981). She worried autistic females "may continue to go unrecognised or misdiagnosed" in DSM-5.

Tes suggesting autistic women are simply hyper-emotional is classic sexism
The image is a recruitment flyer for a research study - the wording states: Participants Needed. Are you a parent or caregiver of an autistic child aged 8-18? Do you have views about their screen use? Complete a short survey to help us understand more about the role of media in their lives. It will take less than 20 minutes and your answers will be anonymous. You can also provide your email address to be entered into a competition to win one of ten Amazon vouchers (closing date 30th April). There is a QR code to follow, and the researcher's email address is also given.
My friend is currently recruiting for her PhD - if you are a parent / guardian / caregiver of an autistic young person (aged 8-18) and have views on their screen use, please consider taking part in this short survey.

@kmunday.bsky.social yet another sign of the US being more divided than the UK. Even fewer rights for trans people but Girls Scouts is more inclusive than Girl Guides.
1. In an incredible public outpouring of support, trans girl scouts on our girl scout cookie list have sold over 330,000 boxes of cookies.
Parents report to us that they are in tears from the support.

Autism is not overdiagnosed.π Self-identifying vs diagnosed autistic adults tended to have similar autistic traits & understanding of autism but *higher* unmet needs, unemployment, & distress. They mostly wanted a diagnosis but barriers eg costs, lack of support.

Yes. These issues are also discussed in my paper.
Senior author of classic theory of mind & autism paper (Frith) minimizes autistic ppl's sensory issues. www.tes.com/magazine/tea...
Yet hypersensitivity is in original (Sukhareva, Asperger, Kanner), autistics' accounts. Interaction happens *btwn* ppl. More in sensory-1st paper:

For those children whose disabilities miraculously disappear when they go to secondary school?
BREAKING: The Department of Education has ended its directive that attempted to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in schools nationwide.
This is a victory for academic freedom and education equity.
Many self-identifying autistic ppl lack formal diagnosis despite wanting it, & have higher unmet needs, unemployment & distress than many diagnosed ppl (as we found). UK is proposing to narrow diagnosis despite subtyping failures.π Rationing healthcare backfires!

100 years ago the prolific psychiatrist Grunya Sukhareva published her work on autism in girls. The world too long ignored the scholarship and clinical care of a pioneering Ukrainian Jewish woman.
This reminds me of how Catherine Lord, speaking for the workgroup for the revision of autism in the DSM-5, said autism includes strengths but they are irrelevant for diagnosis.
Yet holistic assessment would strengthen research, understanding, and practice.

Last month, Secretary Kennedy had a press conference where he claimed that the original intent of the ADA was to exclude trans people. So I asked a bunch of experts and someone who was actually there.
Looking forward to my module (class) Neurodiversity Studies restarting tomorrow. I give students early access to research & we discuss current developments/news, in addition to planned structure. Links to news below:

Folks tend to assume that anyone who claims to be an autism advocate is working on behalf of autistic people's wellbeing. Unfortunately, that is often untrueβespecially with parents who promote " #ProfoundAutism." Why? @ejwillingham.bsky.social explains in our latest, thread-worthy newsletter. 1/
