Oh, and you said you have 16GB or RAM, not 8. That makes me think it could be an issue with the input buffer being too small.
Also could be that your buffer size is too small? Increasing it too much can noticably increase latency so that's a balancing act but might help.
Can you freeze tracks? 8GB might not be enough if you have lots of plugins running but Reaper lets you freeze tracks which is basically a temporary render which then lets it free up the resources taken up by the plugins until you need to make changes to those tracks.
Which DAW? I use Reaper. Works great. Also it might depend on which plugins you're using, or how many.

When I vote, it's for a third party. I also support socialist orgs when and where I can.
I'm not going to vote for a person who makes it clear that I'm going to have to fight them on everything just to hopefully get a few scraps. We deserve far better and people need to stop falling into the two party trap that is just maintaining the supremacy of the rich at the expense of everything.
